Volkswagen’s new Golf R will use a 2.0-litre TSI direct-injection petrol engine with 266-horsepower and 350lb-ft of torque. This is 8% power increase over the old 3.2-litre six-cylinder engine which was used in the R32.

There will be a 0-100km/h time of 5.7 seconds with the manual gearbox, and 5.5 seconds with the DSG unit. These times are about one second quicker than the previous generation model. The top speed is limited to 250km/h.

There will be an 8.5-litre per 100km fuel consumption, and the CO2 emissions are dropped to 199g/km. There will be all-wheel-drive system which no longer requires “a difference between the front and rear axle speeds”.

New parts include LED daytime running lights, LED rear light clusters, Bi-Xenon headlights and twin chrome tail pipes. There will be new things such as an adaptive chassis with three modes, Normal, Comfort and Sport. The Golf R has ventilated disc brakes and black tuned calipers which cover 18-inch wheels.

Inside boasts leather touches and sports seats with R-badging.

Pricing will be announced soon.
