前回はフェイギンがスリ少年たちをスリに出したところで終わりました。
あれだけフェイギンが「無事に、すぐにもどれ」と繰り返し歌っていましたが、
かわいそうに、悪い予感が的中します。。(^^;;
とある老紳士の財布を狙ったドジャーたち。
しかし、盗んだ瞬間、その老人はスリに気づきます！
ドジャーたちは素早く隠れましたが、うしろにいたオリバー少年が見つかってしまいます。
逃げるオリバー少年。
しかし最終的に警察に捕まってしまうのでした。。
ここで舞台版は一幕が終了。
二幕になり、出てくる歌が「oom-pah-pah」
ナンシーが酒場で歌います。

おそらくほとんどの人が小さい頃歌ったことがあるのではないでしょうか。
そう、あの童謡。
小学校で歌ったあの童謡！
けっこう知られていませんが、あの曲、もとは「オリバー！」の曲なんですよ！！

さて、そんな日本人も馴染みのある「ウンパッパ」。
でも「ウンパッパ」って何のことかわかります？
まあ簡単に言えば、「ズンチャッチャ」と同じこと。
つまり楽器の音のリズム。
あーなるほどじゃあほぼ意味は無いわけね、
とは思っちゃいけないよ！！
この歌の「ウンパッパ」には深～い意味が隠されています。。

「The word "oom-pah-pah" is seemingly used euphemistically to refer to both intoxication and fornication」
「"ウンパッパ"という言葉は、遠まわしに、アルコール中毒と姦淫をさしている」
つまり、そういうことです。笑
どうしてウンパッパがそれの隠喩になっているのか？
多くの方がすでにブログで説明をされてありますが、要は楽器のひとつ、トロンボーンからきているとか。
外筒中筒があり、中筒をスライドさせるから、らしい。
それがアレに似ているということだが。。
まさか子供向けのオリバー！ミュージカルにこのような歌をぶっこんでくるとは(^^;;
でも考えてみれば、「イギリス下流階級の貧困」がテーマのこのミュージカル。
それまで「孤児」をテーマに少年たちが多く占める舞台がすすんでいきますが、一端休憩を挟み、二幕の初っぱながこの「ウンパッパ」。
舞台上の酒場には大人たちだけ。
この場面は「酒と性におぼれる大人」といったテーマなのでしょう。
もちろん、この歌を歌うナンシーもまた、幼いころから男に尽くしてこなければいけない運命にあった人なわけで、そういう意味では、いくら子供向けのミュージカルであろうと、大人の世界のダークな歌は欠かせなかったのでしょうね。
ということは舞台をみにきた親子連れなんかは、子どもの目には楽器のリズムに合わせて「ウンパッパ」と大人たちが楽しそうに歌うシーンにうつり、
親の目には、当時のイギリスの社会の闇がうつるということか。
