「The President's Salome Zourabichvili fulfilled her promise and vetoed the law on the transparency of foreign funding. The bill requires non-governmental organizations and media outlets, which receive more than 1/5 of their funding from abroad, to register as bodies pursuing the interests of a foreign power. But the President said the legislation was at odds with Georgia's constitution and represented an obstacle to George's desire to grow closer to Europe. And she urged parliament to abolish it. But the governing Georgian Dream party, which introduced the legislation in the 1st place, can override the president's veto by simple majority. Tens of thousands of Georgians have been protesting against the proposed legislation for more than a month, they say it's adoption marks a turning point for Georgia's democracy and believe that it will be used to silence government critics ahead of crucial parliamentary elections and later this year.」
