「A couple have been divorced by mistake because of a clerical error in an online form.

「We've all done it accidentally clicked the wrong box in a drop down menu. But the consequences in this case were maritally at least, more the final, a solicitor at the law firm Vardags, used an online portal to mistakenly apply for a couple's final order, the last stage in divorce proceedings. The couple, referred to as Mr. and Mrs. Williams, had been married for 21 years and were still negotiating the financial arrangements of their split. So, Andrew McFarlane, the president of the Family Court, said the online system operated with its customary speed and granted the divorce within 21 minutes. In a statement, she said the state should not be divorcing people on the basis of a clerical error, it's not right, not sensible, not Justice. Vardags applied to get the decision overturned. But the Family Court said there's a strong public policy interest in respecting the certainty and finality that flows from a final divorce order, so, in this case, computer doesn't just say no, it says, to create absolute.」
