On October 12th, it was the sports day for my adorable first grandchild at their kindergarten in Tokyo. Due to COVID-19 and other reasons, the event was quite small-scale, but this time, family members were allowed to attend, so we traveled from Hokkaido to Tokyo. Two weeks later, there was also the Yokohama Marathon, so it's been a series of enjoyable events.

The day before, I received a half-day off, picked up my laptop from the house in Atsubetsu, and headed to Chitose Airport. It was fortunate that I had made a parking reservation three days in advance. It was a 3-day weekend due to Health and Sports Day. The scheduled flight was fully booked, and the parking lot was also full.

At the domestic terminal, my spouse and I enjoyed a set of draft beer and snacks at "Ushibimichi" and had a great time. Having beer during the day is the best.

We arrived at Haneda on time and got off at Shinjuku West Exit by limousine bus. Our hotel was near Kabukicho, in Shinjuku 6-chome.

There is also a way to take the Oedo Line and get off at Higashi-Shinjuku, but Shinjuku Station is too vast for a country person like me. So, we took a leisurely walk through Memory Lane and Omoide Yokocho. I was surprised to feel that inbound tourists might make up 70-80% of the crowd.

There are things that you don't understand when you're in the countryside, but when you come to the melting pot of races like Shinjuku, you start to notice them.

We checked into the hotel just before 9 o'clock. We had beer and snacks around 4 o'clock and were very hungry.

When we arrived in the vicinity of Shinjuku and Kabukicho, we headed to the usual Chinese restaurant (although it's been since last year). Its name is "Shanghai Xiao Chi" (Shanghai Xiao Chi (Shanghai Shao Tsu) - Seibu Shinjuku/Chinese Cuisine | Tabelog). Last year, when we went drinking at "Joshi Puroresu Bar Chan Su," which is owned by GAMI, the representative of women's pro wrestling WAVE, she recommended it to us. It was a great time, and we also had a chance to talk to Natsumi Sumeragi.

The next day, we went to Shanghai Xiao Chi for the first time and became fans immediately due to the atmosphere and delicious food that made us feel like we were eating in Shanghai. So, we were determined to go there again this time, even though it was late when we arrived in Shinjuku.

As expected of Shinjuku, even though it was close to 9 o'clock at night, there were more people walking around. This restaurant also operates from 5 PM to 4 AM, truly following the Shinjuku time.

There was a shop in a slightly scary alley without much information, but we were able to enter in about 10 minutes. We had Qingdao beer and Asahi draft beer, along with:

  • Shanghai-style A-vegetables

  • Sweet and spicy stir-fried clams (with fried bread)

  • Sweet and sour spare ribs

  • Stir-fried chicken and peanuts

I thought the portions were a bit large, but it was delicious. Dipping the fried bread in the leftover sauce was exceptionally tasty.

It wasn't too greasy, and despite being Chinese, it had a light taste, making it feel healthy. At that moment, I had already decided. We would definitely go again tomorrow.

The next morning, I went for a leisurely 5 km run to confirm the way from the hotel to Nishi-Shinjuku Station. Since carrying running shoes was heavy, I ran barefoot in purple Taiwanese sandals. My iPhone 15, which I bought just 2 months ago, was very helpful for confirming the route during the morning run. (It was energetic at that time... (;∀;))

I am originally a stickler for punctuality, and we arrived at the sports day venue as planned. It was an extremely smooth first day of our Shinjuku trip.
