In the same way, I thrust at both hands and did KOBE. I stand up. And this time began to talk. "Bereaving" Yes. Aton understood finally. IRE is going to tell a word. KACHARI. A stick heard sound, and moved. The end is pressed from the group. I return to the incomplete circle when seeing first. "cl'et" IRE says again. It's already apparent. That's "tablet". Aton nodded. I noticed after I nodded. The act to which I say "I nod." isn't always the action which shows that it was acknowledged. The person who isn't in common use also seems to need this action in the undeveloped indigenous people by an easy seer. I didn't lay eyes actually. But the talk has been heard. I thought I failed. I rushed and lowered my head. Still, IRE floats smile. One is being seen. But I don't know how to catch the act of which you solicited a favor. This time was the turn Aton has to consider. ガッツポーズ。
イレは一歩跳び退いた。そして、床に座った。
両手を前につき、KOBEを下げた。おでこを床にこすりつけた。
「ビリーブ」
イレの声は、そういうふうに聞こえた。
アトンはイレの行動に戸惑う。どういうことだ
イレはいったん立ち上がった。アトンの目を見る。
そして、また座った。同じように、両手をつき、KOBEをした。
立ち上がる。
今度は、それから口を開いた。
「ビリーブ」
ああ。
ようやくアトンは理解した。イレは、言葉を教えようとしているのだ。
あの床におでこをつける動作は、謝罪を意味している。相手にいっさい目を向けず、無防備な首と背中をさらす。
それは、相手に何をされても文句は言えない姿勢なのだ。
ラクシアでもそうだ。謝る時は頭を下げる。強く謝るなら、より深く下げる。自分の首をさらす。
それが「ビリーブ」という言葉の意味なのだ。
アトンは了解したという合図のために、握っていた拳を開いた。
そして、寝台に腰を下ろした。
戦う意思を捨てたことを示した。
ジュはスマイルした。
イレは扉に向かった。
そして、扉を押し開けた。扉から半身を乗り出し、ゴソゴソと手を動かす。
すぐに振り返った。
手に何かの器具が握られている。
人の拳ほどの金属だった。小指の太さほどの棒が、楕円形の輪を描いている。
だが、完全ではない。
一部は棒ではなく、丸い塊となっていた。やはり鈍く金属の光沢を放っている。
その塊の片端から、棒が出ている。そして、ぐるっと回って戻ってくる。だが、別端では繋がっていなかった。直前でわずかな隙間があいている。戻りきっていない。
「cl'et」
イレは、それを見せながら言う。
錠……か？
アトンにはそう見えた。
イレは、棒の部分を押した。戻りきっていないほうの端。
カチャリ
と
音を立てて棒は動いた。
そして、その先端が塊の中に押しこまれるのを見た。
塊と棒は、いまや完全な輪を作っていた。
それを示した後、イレは小さな鍵を取り出した。一本の細い棒に、いくつかの小板を枝のようにつけたその形状は、はっきりラクシアでも鍵である。
イレは、塊の部分に鍵を差し込む。
カチャリ。音がして、棒が動いた。塊から端が押し出される。最初に見たときの不完全な輪に戻る。
「cl'et」
もう一度イレが言う。もう間違いない。あれは「錠」だ。
アトンは頷いた。
頷いてから、気づいた。「頷く」という行為が、肯定したことを示す仕草とは限らない。
ラクシアでも未開の蛮族の中には、この仕草が、通用しない者がいるらしい。
実際に目にしたわけではない。だが、その話は聞いたことがある。
失敗したと思った。慌てて頭を下げた。
イレは相変わらず、笑みを浮かべている。自分を見ている。だが、頭を下げた自分の行為をどう捕らえているのかわからない。
今度はアトンが考えねばならない番だった。
「cl'et」
思いきって声を出した。精一杯イレの発音に似せた。
それから、手を水平に伸ばした。肘を曲げて自分のほうへ寄せる。
イレは、自分の持っている錠とアトンをかわるがわるに見た。
そして、錠を山なりに放った。
アトンは受け取る。それを持ち、右手の指で指す。
「cl'et」
はっきりと言った。
イレは頷いた。アトンは肩から力が抜けるのを感じた。
これで、語彙が二つ増えた。「錠」と「はい」だ。
