Question

Read the fictional case below and answer the questions that follow. Refer to the line numbers where applicable

Anne is a 27 year old mother of one referred to see Jim, a clinical psychologist. In addition to being a therapist, Jim is a pastor at the Baptist church, a strict disciplinarian and teetotaler who banished his son from home for alcohol abuse.
Anne presents with problems with sleeping, worry about her daughter and her own future and low self esteem. All these started two weeks ago after her boyfriend left her for another girl. Anne tells the therapist she sometimes feels like leaving this world due her feelings of worthlessness. Below a dialogue between the two;

Anne: He just left me after I had accepted to marry him. He proposed to me, I
accepted and he left me three days later. Can you imagine how that feels? T ears welling in her eyes

Jim: Ok, go on and tell me what you think about life in general after your
   experience.

Anne: I feel that life is so unfair, I got a raw deal in life.

Jim: Yes, life can be so terrible at times. One just has to find the inner
strength to move on. So how are you dealing with these terrible times?

Anne: Oh, its been hard, I just stay at home all day in the bedroom and leave my daughter at the neighbours. When my younger sister returns from work, I go and drink my self silly at the local bar. I even carried some alcohol with me here to deal with my nerves. I hope you don’t mind people who drink.

Jim: No, that’s ok, if it makes you feel better however you should try not to
   overdo it

Anne: I know. I also eat lots of sweets and junk food. I used to love eating
them. This has made me gain more weight yet I had reduced a lot of it
to fit in my wedding gown. Do you think you can help me lose this
    weight?

Jim: That will be one of the goals of your therapy. Plus reducing or stopping
   your alcohol use.

Anne: I don’t think I can stop it, I live near many of my close friends and they usually pick me from home to go and drink. Even when I initially don’t
feel like, I end up giving into their demands.

Jim: That seems to be a difficult situation you are in.

Anne: Its not that bad. I think that company keeps me going. I have actually
met a nice young man and we have been intimate already. I hope to use him
to get back at my ex.

Jim: That is wrong and selfish of you. You have stooped down so low just to
get back at your ex. You disappoint me after all the progress we have
   made in the last sessions.

Anne: I know its selfish but I feel like I need to feel loved. No one likes
me, I don’t deserve to feel so low after all I put in.

Jim: Its must be a difficult experience you are going through.
Some developments however show that am handling well. For example I am now closer to his mother despite the resentment I have for him. When we were
dating, I could not stand her interference in our business. I just
feel like making friends with her these days.

Jim: Now that is a good start, where do you see this new found friendship
   heading?

Anne: Nowhere. It just helps me feel in control of my life and that I do not
   depend on him.

Jim: Tell me about your childhood, what early pleasant memories do you have?

Anne: Oh, they are so many. I recall going out to the beach with my dad
and mum, having my mum bathe me and comb my hair. I really had a good
childhood. When I looked at other families and kids at school, I could
see that out family was better off financially and that I was a happy
person destined for good things. I was loved by all my friends and
family and never had any problems getting along with others. I think
it’s the way my mother brought me up, she would tell me that holding
grudges and making others angry is not the way to live life. That its
best to keep those around you happy.

Jim: You should be very happy with your parents and proud of them.
