今日は、灰について
。
正確に言うと、
「灰汁」についてです。
あ、料理の時
に出る灰汁じゃないです
。
木灰に水をかけて一晩おいた
上澄み液の事です
。
Today,
I'll write about ash.
To be accurate,
it is about wood ash lye water.
It is not scum when you cook.
Wood ash lye water is a clear top of the water
after mixing ash and water.

私、
藍染めをするまで
「灰」って、ごみのように思っていました。
灰さん、ごめんなさい
I had thought that ash isn't worth at all
until I started to learn indigo dyeing.
Sorry, Ash.
何がすごいか
っていうと、
灰汁は洗剤になるという事。
実際
昔の人は灰汁で食器や衣類を洗っていたそうです
。
そして、 今でも
藍染めで染めをした後の
生地についた灰汁や不純物を洗う為に
利用されているのです
。
What is great about the lye water
is that it can be used asdetergent for clothes and dishes.
In old days people used to use it for washing.
And still now
some dyers in the indigo dyeing world
use it for detergent.

半日後、出来上がった上澄み液
A clear top of the water, after half a day
灰から灰汁を作って、
片野絞りのハンカチを洗いました。
液に手を入れると ぬるっとして、
味見するとピリッと・・・。
不純物や灰汁が、
結構出ました・・・。
そんな、話題を
先日のオンライン英会話でしてみたら、
先生のおばあさんが
灰で食器を洗っていた、というのです。
そんなに遠くない昔ですよね。
Last week
I washed an indigo dyed handkerchief
by using the wood ash lye water.
When I touched the water, my fingers became a little slippery.
I tased it and it was tangy?? I don't know the English word.
The color of the handkerchief became more beautiful.
How impressive!
I talked about this experience when I had an online English lesson.
My teacher told me that his grandmather used to wash
dishes using ash.
This natural way of washing is not so very old practice, I think.

藍染めが教えてくれています。

I really admire the wisdom of old people.
Indigo dyeing teaches me how important our nature is.
The more I know about indigo dyeing, the more I'm into it.
（藍の染め液を作る段階でも
藍の色素は水に溶けないので、
アルカリ状態にして色素を還元する必要があります。
その時にも灰汁が使われていま～す）
(Indigo dye is not soluable, so lye water is used
on the process of making indigo dye liquid)
