ウオードって
Have you ever heard of "woad”？
日本では、藍染めには蓼藍が主流ですが、
ヨーロッパでは、
ウオードという植物から
藍の染料を作っていたのです
。
In Japan
Polygonum tinctorium is a popular plant
to produce indigo dye,
but in Europe "woad" was the one
to produce indigo dye.
そして、
インド藍や合成染料に押され、
一度ウオードは途絶えてしまった
のですが、
今再び
ウオードで藍染めを復活
させようという
人々が少しづつ増えてきているのだそうです。
日本と同じですね。
Around 1600
woad disappeared once due to
cheap Indian indigo and synthetic dye, but
recently it has been revived again
little by little by peopel
who cherish their tradition.
そのウオードを
先日初めてこの目
で見ました。
今までは
ネットでしか見たことがなかったので
とてもびっくり、感激しました。
見つけたのは、
徳島市で開かれた
とくしま藍サミットの出店。
藍製品のお店も何軒かありましたが、
そのうちの1軒が、
藍の研究をしている団体で
日本の藍と一緒に
ウオードがおかれていたんです。
The other day
I went to see the woad for the first time,
I was so surprised to find it becuase
it was only seen on the Internet.
The place where I found it was a festival
called Tokushima Indigo Summit.
There were several stalls to sell
and show indigo dyed products,
and one of them was the group to study indigo plants.
It displayed several indigo plants,
including woad.
さらに、こちらの出店のグループは、
藍でペイント
する!?
体験コーナーもありました。
商品化はされていないそうですが、
藍の墨で水墨画のような絵がかけたり、
そのままクレヨンのようにして絵を描いたり、
今すぐにでも
手に入れたいと思っちゃいました
The stall also had a drawing workshop using
indigo dye material.
It looked like a crayon
and the picture looked like they were drawn
with a crayon.
When dissolved in water,
it can be used as a water color paint
What an amazing invention it is!
