Serena van der Woodsen is smart and super pretty ... but is constantly being told she is not working to her full potential.

Serena van der Woodsen is also surprisingly vulnerable, despite seemingly having it all together on the surface.

Like Blair Waldorf, her best friend (but with whom she has a strained relationship) Serena and her family are prominent in New York society

Given her beauty and personality,

Serena enjoys a steady string of admirers, namely Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley) and Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford) at present, but also numerous others in the past.

After a scandalous affair with Nate - who was dating Blair Waldorf - Serena left N.Y.C., only to return a year later under a cloud of suspicion.

The subject of their secret - or not so secret - hookup remains sore and mysterious for Blair and others. But it turns out Serena left for another

reason: A guy she was hooking up with overdosed on drugs and died while her friend Georgina Sparks filmed the whole thing.

Georgina later resurfaced and when Serena would not reenter their old, wild lifestyle, G threatened to blackmail her with the tape.

S then came clean about the overdose and ultimately G got hers - thanks to a little help from Blair and Chuck Bass, whose father Bart married Serena's mom in the season finale.

Despite the attention she receives from the opposite sex, Serena constantly longs for real romance... which she eventually finds with Dan Humphrey, a middle class guy from Brooklyn who sweeps her off her feet with is genuine charm.

But her web of lies and distancing herself over the situation with G - who also tried to meddle with Dan - scared him away, and the two are not

together... at least for now.

Serena has one younger brother, Eric van der Woodsen, and lives with her mother, Lily van der Woodsen, as well as her new stepfather, Bart Bass, and stepbrother and friend, Chuck Bass.

Blair Waldorf

Bio

Blair Waldorf (full name: Blair Cornelia Waldorf) was born into high society on Manhattan's Upper East Side. Her father is Harold Waldorf, Esq., and her mother is Eleanor Waldorf.

The youngster is 5'4" and slender, with beautiful brown eyes. Blair is also a hopeless romantic who idolizes Audrey Hepburn, classic movies and upscale traditions, but whose sensitive side often clashes with her tendency to be bitchy and controlling.

Blair Waldorf is vain, though her friendship with Serena van der Woodsen (Blake Lively) causes her to be insecure at times. Perhaps as a result, she has become known as Queen B - useing her charm, money and social clout to win people over.

Blair Waldorf's dad, once a uptight lawyer, now lives in a French chateau with his French lover, Roman, who was a model Eleanor used to work with. He brought Roman to New York for Christmas and after some initial friction, Blair warmed up to him and they invited her to spend the summer in France.

She has been through - and continues to experience the ups and downs of - a rather turbulent relationship with boyfriend Nate Archibald (Chace Crawford) throughout the series, losing him to other girls several times, including Jenny Humphrey (Taylor Momsen) and even Serena. In fact, Serena's tryst with Nate was thought to be the reason S left town - and still looms large over their friendship.

After an uncharacteristic night in which she performed at a burlesque club on a whim, Blair Waldorf lost her virginity to Chuck Bass (Ed Westwick) in the back of his father's limo.

She proceeded to keep this secret affair going for a bit, but it blew up in her face and she was temporarily ousted as the school's social queen by Jenny Humphrey. She then went back to Nate after he finally showed some gumption at the ball. This upset Chuck, who is Nate's best friend and was starting to fall for Blair.

At the end of the first season of Gossip Girl, Blair and Chuck seemed to

have a good thing going, only to have him return to his womanizing ways

and throw it away. Can Chuck and Blair recapture the magic - or is this Queen Bee destined to find new love this year?

Dan Humphrey

Dan Humphrey is a romantic whose imagination runs wildly at the worst times. He over-analyzes life and can grow easily frustrated.

This young hunk is best friends with Vanessa Abrams (Jessica Szohr) and the big brother of Jenny Humphrey (Taylor Momsen).

Dan Humphrey has been head over heels in love with socialite Serena

van der Woodsen for many years, and finally snagged his dream girl in t

he first season of Gossip Girl.

The adorable pair soon began dating and - after some initial difficulties

- made love for the first time on Christmas.

However, their differences in social class - as well as her shady past

and characters like Georgina Sparks - have driven them back apart.

An aspiring writer and fairly straight-arrow guy with a good heart and

morals, Dan maintains his close relationship with his sister, Jenny and his father Rufus.

He does not really fit in with Nate or Chuck, though he and the former

seem to get along better than he does with the latter.
