Chapter 1 Kiritsubo: The Paulownia Pavilion
(Genji: birth to age 12)
The Shining Prince Genji is born between Emperor Kiritsubo and Kiritsubo no Kōi. Since the consort monopolizes the emperor's affections, she becomes a target for the hatred of the other ladies of his court and collapses and ultimately succumbs to illness. As he grows up, the young prince's exceptional appearance and disposition become conspicuous. He is sent to see a physiognomist who has come to Japan from Korea and it is foretold that although the child is destined to become emperor, if he were to ascend to that position the country would fall into disorder. After much deliberation, the emperor divests the prince of his royal status and gives him the commoner's name Genji. Genji comes of age at twelve years old and is married to Aoi, the daughter of the Minister of the Left, but in his heart he secretly yearns for Fujitsubo, who is the object of the affections of his father, the Emperor.

たまかずら
とうのちゅうじょう
Genji has begun to visit the place of a lady living on Rokujo Avenue. Stopping in to visit his nurse who lives on Gojō on his way, his eye alights on the white moonflowers that are blooming at the neighboring house. When he requests a stem, a young girl appears from inside and presents a fan to place the flowers on. Intrigued, Genji asks Koremitsu, his foster brother, to investigate the woman who lives in the house (Yūgao). At length, his heart is stolen by the gentle and tender- hearted Yugao and he comes to visit her frequently. Visiting Yugao's home on the fifteenth night of the eighth month, Genji vows his enduring love even into the next life and takes Yugao away to a certain estate, but that night Yugao is possessed by an evil spirit and dies. To no Chujo had actually visited Yugao in the past and the two had had a child (Tamakazura).
