所内で本日回されたEメール回覧板は、うちの事務所が入っているビルの管理人からの連絡で、Republic of South Sudanに関するものだった。
Eメールの本文：
The Government of Southern Sudan Mission, a tenant on the 6th floor, will be holding its Independence Day celebration in our building lobby and in front of the building on Saturday, July 9th. The country, now named the Republic of South Sudan, won its independence from Sudan in elections earlier this year and its official date of formation is July 9. The tenant will continue to office here and is making its premises the Embassy.
A lobby reception will be from 9 am to 2 pm and a flag ceremony will be held in front of the building at 11 am. Please feel free to join in the celebration but also keep this activity in mind when scheduling any work over the weekend. Let me know if you have any questions.

そういえば、今日出勤してきたときにエレベーターで出会った二人の黒人男性は共に、黒光りするような肌で、すらりと背が高く、スーツにカッターシャツ・ネクタイ姿だったが、その色使いがちょっと変っていた。そして、最も普通でなかったのは、何本も水平方向に引かれた刺青が彼らの額に入っていた点。
なんだろこいつら、と私はそのとき思ったのだった。二人の目の輝きは普通ではないと思った。そして、アフリカで命をかけて政争をする人たちを想像したのだった。そのときには、このRepublic of South Sudanのことは全く知らなかったのだが…そういうことだったのだ。
世界の政治の中心と言ってもよい米国のワシントンDCに居るのを改めて実感した。
…Republic of South Sudanの米国大使館が爆弾テロにあったりしたら、これ、直上のうちの事務所もふっとぶね。しばらく、我々も命をかけて勤務するようなことになっているのか…どうか？
