米大統領選挙に戸惑う Worried About the U.S. Presidential Race
アメリカでは、大統領選挙の予備選挙が各州で順に行われていますが、果たしてどうなるのかと心配になってきました。
The primary elections in the U.S. are proceeding apace, but I have started to worry about what might happen.
もし民主党の候補者がサンダース氏になれば、彼は社会主義者なので、自分としては絶対に大統領になってほしくありません。ところがクリントン氏は意外と支持層が薄くて、どうなるのか分かりません。
If Sanders becomes the candidate for the Democratic Party, he is a socialist so I wouldn’t want to see him become the president. However, Clinton’s support base seems to be limited, so there is not telling what might happen here.

共和党でも、従来の政治に対する不信感に後押しされてトランプ氏が大勢の支持を得ていますが、実は彼はかつて人工中絶の擁護を表明しているし、銃規制にも賛成のようです。彼の本心が明らかになったら、総選挙では強固な保守派の支持を得られない可能性があるので、共和党の票は分裂するかも知れません。
As for the Republicans, Trump is riding high on the people’s distrust of traditional politics, but actually he has expressed support for abortion rights in the past and appears to be in favor of gun control. If it becomes clear that that is actually his position, he will have trouble garnering the votes of the far right in the general election, and the Republican Party may split.

いわゆるアウトサイダー（政治のしがらみのない人）が好まれがちですが、実はプロの政治家こそが、実現可能な政策を主張し、実行するための支持を得ることが現実的です。
So-called outsiders tend to be popular, but in actuality it is the professional politicians who are able to craft credible policies and garner the support to see them through.
これからの一か月間で行われる選挙が、これからの行方を決める正念場になるでしょう。
