中世ヨーロッパでは縦抱き授乳が主流だったのかもしれません。
モラレスの「授乳の聖母」では、聖母がスペインの農夫の服装をしていて、
授乳しやすそうな工夫がされています。
現代にも応用できそうなデザインです。

The laborer whom it seems to be easy to nurse is considered
to be it.
It is the design which I seem to be able to apply
in the present age.

次の「赤ん坊のイエスに乳をやるマリア」も縦抱き授乳です。

当時の画家は、職業画家だったとしても、実際の母と赤ちゃんをモデル
にするしかなかったでしょうから、縦抱き授乳が行われていたのでしょう。
