Part 32. 頻度の英語 (類義語シリーズ⑩)

いつも～する、とか、よく～する、という表現。
日本語でも使いますよね。

英語でもいろんな表現があります。
今回はこれを整理しときましょう。

How often ～?　に答える時の単語(頻度)

always　いつも、毎回
He is always late.
彼はいつも遅刻する。

often　よく、しばしば
I often forget about time.
ボクはよく時間がたつのを忘れる。

sometimes　時々
Sometimes even dogs cry and sometimes smile.
犬だって泣くこともあれば笑うこともある。

from time to time　時々、折々、時期ごとに(不規則)
She travels abroad from time to time.
彼女は機会あるごとに海外へ旅行する。

rarely　めったに～しない、たまにしか～しない
He is rarely wrong.
キミはめったに間違うことがない

seldom　めったに～しない
He seldom commits an error.
彼はめったに間違いを犯さない

not seldom しばしば、おうおうにして
It's not seldom he makes mistakes.
彼はよくミスをしがちだ。

seldom or never まず～しない
He seldom or never talks to a stranger.
彼が知らない人に話しかけることはまずない。

occasionally　時折、不規則にたまに
There will be occasionally thunderstorm or shower tomorrow.
明日はときおり雷かにわか雨があるでしょう。

only occasionary　まれに、たまにしか～しない
These days I play tennis only occasionally.
最近はごくたまにしかテニスをしない


How many times ～?に答える時は

once, twice, three times
1度、2度、3度
four times a week
1週間に4回
once in a lifetime

How many times do you go to gym per week?
-I go there every other day.
週に何度くらいジムに行く？
―１日おきかな。

a few times

ほとんどない

数回、何度か

パリに行ったことある？
―　うん、２回ほど。

times の代わりに days, minutes などの時間、
または meals, visits などそのものズバリでも通じるね。
How many times can you jump per minute?
-I guess 30 jumps at maximum.
1分間に何回ジャンプできる？
ーできても30回くらいかな。


When ～?（時間、時刻、場合）に答える時

all the time　～の間ずっと、いつでも
She was crying in a car all the time on a way back home.
彼女は帰りの車の中でずっと泣いてた。
Why are you whining all the time?
何でお前はいつもグズグズ言ってるんだい？


every time (≠everytime という単語はない!!) 毎度、～するたびに
I feel happy every time I see her.
彼女に会うたびに嬉しくなる(= whenever I see her)

anytime(副詞) = at any time(名詞) どんな時でも、いつでも
When do you wanna go? Anitime is fine !
いつ行きたい？　いつでもいいよ。

will always = forever, eternally　いつまでも、永遠に
I will always be with you.
ボクはいつまでもキミといっしょだよ。


連続性・規則性をあらわす副詞
ly をとって形容詞にしても使ってみようね！

frequently しばしば、頻繁に
This is a frequently asked question from our customers.
これはお客さんからよく聞かれる質問です。

regularly 毎回、定期的に
They come to this restaurant regularly.
彼らはこのレストランンの常連だ。

periodically　　期間ごとに、時間をおいて毎回
We talked about the issue periodically.
我々はこの問題に関して毎回話し合っただろう。

continuously 時間の空きがなく連続して、ずっと
The car alarm beeped continuously.
車のアラームが鳴り続けていた。

continually　時間の空きがあっても連続して、絶えず
He was continually snoring like a pig.
彼は豚のようにずっといびきをかいていた。

constantly　時間の空きがあっても連続して、しきりに、一定的に
She passed the exam by stydying constantly.
彼女は規則的に勉強することで試験にパスした。

consistently　首尾一貫して、最初から最後まで同じに
Her voice was resonant in the place consistently.
彼女の声はその場に終始一貫してよく響いた。
