百二十歳のカルメン・カマチヨおばあちゃんに
会うために家に行きましたら、
弁当をもってすぐそこの畑に行ったと言われ、
あっちの畑だろうと言うので、
二十分くらいバスに乗って途中まで行き、
また山路を歩いてその畑に行ってみましたが
いません。
それじゃそっちだと言うので、
また十五分ほどバスで行って、また二十分ほど
山路を歩いて、やっとめざすカルメン・カマチヨ
おばあちゃんに会うことができました。
どうして長生きしたと思いますかと伺うと、
神様が長生きさせてくださった。私は、
ただ働くことが大好きで、土に親しんで
楽しんで働いてきた。
皆と仲良く、多くの
楽しい友人、知人がいる。

おじいさんもそのひとりで、年上の兄のように
親しみ、いろいろなことを教えられて、
彼の言うように心明るく楽しく生きてきました。
こうして話をしているおばあちゃんの表情や
雰囲気は優しく温かく、本当にかわいらしい
おばあちゃん、と抱きつきたい思いにさせられます。
言葉は通じないのに、何か親しみを感じて、
背中をなでさすり抱きかかえました。
その背中もまた柔らかく温かいのです。
年寄りの背中ではなく、やっぱり幼児のような
背中でした。
人生を自分らしく生き抜くことは
容易いことではいけれど、
そう悪いものでもないと学べる人に
出会えること。それを大切にすること。
