The EU Commission, as a part of its allergens labeling regulation for food and beverages, stipulated that all wines sold in the EU must include a statement that wine contains sulphites if there is any detectable presence of sulphites in the final product. The sulphite statement is required as of November 25, 2005.
The sulphites statement can appear outside the visual field where the other compulsory particulars appear.
The statement can appear on a sticker and must be put on the bottle before the wine is put into circulation on the EU market. You may wish to have your importer/distributor place the sulphite statement on the bottles before the product reaches the retailer.
NEW LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
According to the EU Commission, EU member states can require that the sulphite (or any other allergens statement) be listed in their home language(s).
The following is a list of the acceptable sulphites statements in the EU member states:
Austria: The German statement (ENTHALT SULFIT) is acceptable or any language
“showing a similarity with German for the expression ‘Contains Sulphites’; for
example, English, French or Italian.”
Belgium: Belgium requires that the statement appear in at least one of the following languages:
CONTIENT SULFITES (French), BEVAT SULFIETEN (Dutch)
ENTHALT SULFIT (German), or CONTAINS SULPHITES (English)
Czech Republic: OBSAHUJE SIRI?ITANY
Cyprus: Περι?χει διοξε?διο του θε?ου (Greek)
Denmark: KONSERVERINGSSTOFFER: SULFITTER or “other languages which
only differ from Danish with regard to unessential differences in spelling.”
While Denmark has not specified what these languages are, we assume that
Swedish would qualify as an alternative language that could be used instead of
Danish.
Estonia: SISALDAB SULFITID or any of the official languages of the EU.
Finland: SISALTAA SULFIITTEJA (Finish) and INNEHALLER SULFITER(Swedish)
France: CONTIENT SULFITES or CONTAINS SULPHITES
Germany: ENTHALT SULFIT in addition to any other language that consumers can
understand (i.e. French or English).
Greece: Περι?χει διοξε?διο του θε?ου
Hungary: TARTALMAZ SZULFITOK
Ireland: CONTAINS SULPHITES or CONTAINS SULFITES
Italy: CONTIENE I SOLFITI
Latvia: SATUR SULFITI
Lithuania: SUDETYJE YRA SULFITAI
Luxembourg: CONTIENT SULFITES (French), ENTHALT SULFIT (German),
CONTAINS SULPHITES (English) or any of the official languages of the EU.
Malta: FIH SULFITI (Maltese), CONTAINS SULPHITES or CONTIENE I SOLFITI (Italian)
Netherlands: BEVAT SULFIETEN
Poland: ZAWIERA SIARCZYNY
Portugal: CONTEM SULFITOS or CONTAINS SULPHITES (English) or an official
language of the EU which “the final consumer can easily understand.”
Slovakia: OBSAHUJE SIRI?ITANY
Slovenia: VSEBUJE SULFIT
Spain: CONTIENE LOS SULFITOS
Sweden: INNEHALLER SULFITER or CONTAINS SULPHITES
UK: CONTAINS SULPHITES or CONTAINS SULFITES
Although they are not members of the EU, Norway and Switzerland also require the sulphites statement.
Switzerland: CONTAINS SULPHITES or ENTHALT SULFIT (German) or CONTIENT
SULFITES (French)
Norway: INNEHOLDER SULFITTER
Your label may include multiple languages. You may wish to include both the English version of the statement as well as the language of the country of import.
It is our understanding that the sulphites statement may be placed on the label or on the bottle as a sticker.
This information can appear outside the visual field where the other compulsory particulars appear.
As far as type size, EU Regulation 753/2002, which governs wine labeling, states that the compulsory
particulars, which now includes the sulphite declaration, must be presented in easily readable, indelible
characters large enough to stand out well against the ground on which they are printed and clearly
distinguishable from all other written and graphic content of the label.
We recommend that you use the same type size and lettering for products sold in the EU as you do for
products sold in the US. Please note that some countries require that sulphites must be spelled with the
letters “ph” and not with the letter “f”.
