Let's study English together!!

Hannah just got to work and is having coffee in her office.

Hannah:  Good morning, Matt.
Matt:  Good morning.  I'm sorry I'm late.  My train was delayed because of this rain.
Hannah:  It's okay.  Nothing you can do about the weather.  It's pouring.
Matt:  Yeah, I hope it clears up soon.

Key Point:  "It's pouring." in Japanese is "Ame ga zaa zaa futte imasu."

Bruce is at a restaurant with Keenan and Emily.

Emily:  What are you going to have?
Keenan:  I'm going to have the pesto spaghetti.  How about you?
Emily:  I'm going with the seafood gumbo.
Bruce:  I think I'll try the red snapper.  By the way, guess who I met the other day.
Keenan:  Who?
Bruce:  Remember how I ran into that lady twice in Aspen?
Emily:  Yeah?
Bruce:  She came to the restaurant last Friday.  She's the ad executive Sherry's working with to sell her sauces.
Keenan:  You're kidding!
Emily:  No way!
Bruce:  Yeah.  Life is intriguing, isn't it.

Key Point:  "Intriguing" (in tree ging) means interesting and mysterious.

Hannah and her sister are having brunch.

Hannah:  What are you going to have?
Kim:  I'm going to have the vegetarian omelette.  How about you?
Hannah:  I think I'll have the vegan lasagna.  Oh, I wanted to tell you.  Remember the guy I ran into twice in Aspen, the guy who gave me his taxi?
Kim:  Yeah?
Hannah:  I went to do a presentation the other day and he was there!
Kim:  No way!
Hannah:  Yeah, what a coincidence, huh.
Kim:  Life is funny.

Key Point:  If you randomly see someone you know you can say "I ran into _____."

Bruce and Sherry are talking after the presentation.

Bruce:  A little more wine, chef?
Sherry:  No thanks.  I have an early morning.  So what did you think of the presentation?
Bruce:  It was excellent.  Clear, concise, very professional.  Your sauce will be flying off the shelves in no time.
Sherry:  I wish my grandma were here.  She'd be so proud.  It's her recipe, after all.
Bruce:  I'm sure she's proud of you.  A toast to Grandma Silverman!
Sherry:  To Grandma!

Key Point:  You can toast someone by raising your glass, saying "To NAME!", and clinking others' glasses before drinking.

Sherry is giving Hannah and Matt a tour of the bistro.

Sherry:  And right this way is the kitchen....
(Bruce is slicing a tomato as they enter)
Sherry:  Chef, do you have a minute?
Bruce:  Yes, chef!
Sherry:  Hannah, I'd like you to meet Bruce Collins, my excutive chef.  Bruce, this is Hannah Saunders, a director at Vanguard Advertising.
Hannah:  Wow.  What a coincidence!  We have actually already met.
Bruce:  That's right.  We met in Aspen.  It's nice to see you again.
Hannah:  Likewise.  Yes, he took a picture for Meryl and I at a lookout spot and a few days later he gave me his taxi.  Thanks again.
Bruce:  My pleasure.
Sherry:  Wow, what a funny coincidence.
Bruce:  Yes, it's a small world, isn't it.

Key Point:  When introducing a visitor to a colleague, it is polite to introduce your colleague first:  "Hannah, I'd like you to meet Bruce Collins, my excutive chef.  Bruce, this is Hannah Saunders, a director at Vanguard Advertising."

Hannah and Bruce have officially met!
