Today(Jan 11th) is 成人の日（せいじんのひ sei jin no hi=coming-of-age Day) and The ceremonies are being held across the country,someplaces(countryside area) had it on New Year`s day as they get back home to be with family(so easy to get everyone there) and big cities has/had it on 9th or 10th or 11th.
It is a big deal for the people who become the age of 20 in the year(In Japan,school starts from April,so they are the ones that is born between April 1st to March 31st).

Looks like they get messages from former teachers(in Junior High) and parents are with them(small city or town must let parents to come to join the ceremony to see their child,which is nice!)
They are allowed to start smoking and drinking alchol now(at the age of 20 in Japan)legally.Of course there are some can`t wait until then^^;!!??
