Japan braces for very strong typhoon Vongfong

Typhoon Vongfong, ranked as "very strong" in its intensity, is heading north in the Pacific Ocean toward the Japanese archipelago. The country's meteorological agency is calling for people to be on the alert over the weekend through early next week.
The agency says Vongfong was about 650 kilometers south of Okinawa Island on Thursday afternoon with a central atmospheric pressure of 920 hectopascals.
The extremely low pressure near the center is causing wind of up to 180 kilometers an hour.
The meteorological agency says Vongfong will approach Japan over the weekend with very strong intensity although it may weaken slightly.
A weather satellite image shows the typhoon's eye forming almost a perfect circle in the past few days, which suggests strong wind near the center.
The agency says Vongfong intensified rapidly on Tuesday from 970 hectopascals to 905 hectopascals, energized by warm sea water in the northern Pacific near the equator.
It grew after passing over an area of 100-meter-deep water that's warmer than 25 degrees Celsius.
Professor Kazuhisa Tsuboki at Nagoya University pointed to that warmth as a cause of the rapid intensification of the typhoon.
