爆発後の福島第一原発4号機を見るときの尺度をご案内します。
中央よりもやや下に横たわる灰色の長方形の板、この長方形の短い方の長さが、だいたい人の背丈です。
■燃料棒の外観

これは燃料被覆管の画像ですが、燃料ペレットは長さ４mくらいの被覆管で覆われているので、外観はこんな感じです。なお、この被覆管の外径は1.3㎝くらい、女性の小指くらいと思ってください。

◆見つけられなかった人のために
2分37秒、画面手前に横たわる灰色の核燃料ラックのような物に巻きついた灰色のシート状の物に注目。そのシートを貫通しているのが、燃料棒の被覆管。
それが見えたら今度は、それと同様のまっすぐな細い棒がいくつもあるのが見えてくるでしょう。
建屋の金属製の建築資材が湾曲しているのに対し、この細いきゃしゃな棒は、まっすぐを保っています。それは、融点1800℃以上という耐熱性に優れたジルカロイという金属でできた燃料被覆管だからでしょう。
■このことから、2011年3月15日朝の福島第一原発4号機の爆発を受けた使用済み核燃料プールについての報道は、まだ日米の情報統制が未調整だったころの外国の報道の方が信憑性が高かったと言えるでしょう。
その主な報道は次の通り。
★プールは完全に干上がった
★プールは格納室の外に在る
★プールには重大な穴やひびがある
