A photo posted to Twitter apparently shows a dealing room in the BNZ Building, Harbour Quays with panels and framing hanging from the ceiling and desks and chairs strewn about the place following Sunday's tremor.

The damage appears to be more consistent with an extremely violent quake such as that which destroyed much of central Christchurch in 2011.

BNZ external relations manager Emily Davies says engineers were assessing the building on Monday and it was closed until further notice.
