別海町の基幹産業は酪農。１９５０年代から機械を使った大規模な開拓が
行われた。その後も整備されて現在の広大な酪農地帯を形成した。生乳の生産量
は日本一で、高級アイスクリームの原料供給地として有名。

The key industry of the town of Bekkai is dairy farming. Large scale
land reclamation was started in the 1950s. It continued until a large
dairy farming area had been formed. Bekkai is the top place for the
production of milk in Japan, and it is famous as a supplier of ingredients
for expensive ice cream.
