3月2日（Ash Woolson)
今日は天候にめぐまれ、福山（広島県）から浅口市（岡山県）まで24km歩き、金光教のお寺に
到着しました。明日は15kmと少し軽めのウォークだそうです。
今日、私は、まだほんの7歳か8歳になる子どもたちと一緒に歩きました。そこでふと、今自分は
何をしているのだろうかと考えました。こうやって、異国の地でウォークに参加していることは、
私の深いところにはほとんど関係していないように思えます。でも、子どもたちと遊んだり、話したり
していると、ある記憶がよみがえってきました。子どもたちはいつも私を幸せな気持ちにしてくれます。
2003年、私はアメリカ兵としてイラクに従軍していました。イラクの子どもたちは、私のことを
どんなにか恐れていたことでしょう。脅すようにと命じられていました。
また、子どもたちが手榴弾を撒き散らしているとよく聞かされていました。これは、ベトナム戦争の
ときから繰り返し話されています。こういった子どもたちが致命的な傷を負って生きていかねば
ならないことは皆さんもよく耳にしたことがあると思います。私は命令にそのまま従って、
基地の外で活動していた1年ほどは毎日、5.56mmの弾丸をこめたM-16 ライフルを子どもたちに向けつづけました。
今では、当時自分がやっていたことは信じられませんが、確かに自分はやったということを知っています。
決して、戦争にたよるべきではない、戦争は必要ではない、ということを世界中の人々に知ってほしいと
思います。まさに、私たち人類は戦争を超え発展してきたのだ、ということを自覚しました。

Today was a long walk but with good weather. We walked about 24 Km from
Fukuyama city in Hiroshima prefecture. We are now staying at a Konkokyo temple .
Tomorrow we are looking at a small walk of about 15 Km.
Today as I was walking with some children only seven or eight, I started thinking about
what I was doing. Walking across a forign country for something that at surface level
has very little to do with me. But the children I was enjoying playing with and talking to
struck a memory in my heart. Children make me happy and have always done
so.
I was in Iraq in 2003 part of the u.s. army, and I remember how afraid
I was of the children in that country. How afraid I was taught to be from
my command. Every other day we were told that children were dropping hand
grenades into vehicles. A story that has been repeated since at lease the
American war against Vietnam. These children are deadly is what they
convince you. I believed what I was told and did what I was supposed to.
I pointed my M-16 rifle fully loaded with 5.56 mm bullets at children every
day I was outside the base for the year I was in Iraq. Now I can't believe
that I did it, but I know that I did.
I want the world to know that war should never be resorted to, it is
never necessary. We as a human race have evolved beyond war, and now it is
just a matter of realizing this truth.
