25th September 2010
My sister and I went to the Heijo-kyo 1300th Anniversary. I didn't think it would be that special because I knew what the Heijo-kyo was like. But when I was there, the atmosphere was amazing! The scale of the field and the reconstruction of the building where the emperor used to live a long time ago were beyond my imagination. It made me feel that I shouldn't judge things until I see them with my eyes![]()
This is one of the characters of this festival. A deer with a top of a temple on the head (I think it is ridiculous to put the two together but the other character is a buddha with horns of deer on the head! These characters were designed by a elite artist but a lot of Japanese people criticised the idea).
Luckily, it was a perfect sunny day and the light from the sky onto the area in front of the 'daikoku-den', covered with white tiny pebbles, together with the blue sky and the view of 'daikoku-den' in the front made the place look like heaven
I wish you were there with me
Inside 'daikoku-den'. The emperor used to sit inside the hexagon-shaped thing in the middle.
The ceiling of 'daikoku-den' with drawings of four gods and 12 chinese branches.
After seeing 'daikoku-den', we moved to 'Suzaku-mon (Vermillion Bird Gate)'. We were getting tired after walking in the hot weather. We were lucky that the 'heartful tram' running in a circle around the Heijo-kyo wasn't full so the conductor let us get on it even though it is usually for disabled people and elderly only! The tram was as slow as people walking but eventually we got to the gate. The gate was built before I went abroad unlike the recently-built 'daikoku-den' so we saw the gate many times. We had a look at the souvenir shop and I bought a postcard for my sweet boyfriend on the other side of the world
Because of the hot weather, we couldn't make it to the takoyaki shop. My sister has been wanting to go to the shop for 5 years but we couldn't go again - it is one of those shops where we always think of going but we never make time to go there because it is close to my house![]()
There was also an exhibition of a ship which used to take Japanese messengers to Tang China 1300 years ago. But we didn't go into the exhibition centre because we were too tired.
The ship that Japanese messengers to China used to use. They often sank on the way to China.
So that was my 2-hour trip to Heijo-kyo
I've sent a postcard to you today and I'm always thinking of you my gorgeous husbbie
