レソト教育大学（LCE :Lesotho College of Education ）では他国のボランティアも活動していました。

オ－ストラリアとアメリカのピースコー達です。

オ－ストラリアのボランティアは首都のマセルキャンパスにいますが地方に出かけることが多いようです。

首都から150Km離れた「クチャーズ・ネック」で活動しているアメリカンピースコーです。

彼女と話してお互い同級生だと判りました。彼女には孫がいるとのことでした。

I talked to her and found out that we were both classmates. She told me that she has a grandchild.

オ－ストラリアのボランティアは首都のマセルキャンパスにいますが地方に出かけることが多いようです。

以前は首都マセルでも活動していたようです。

首都マセルで活動していた隊員に事件が発生したため地方だけで活動することになったそうです。

American Peace Corps.

They used to be active in the capital city of Maseru.

She is a strong person with experience volunteering in the Middle East and other countries.

それにしても約１３０名のアメリカンピースコーがレソトで活動しているとは驚きです。アメリカの底力を感じてしまいます。

 街中をブラブラと歩く事は安全上避けており、移動は車でするため運動不足となりがちです。

それと、行き先が限られているため休日等は時間を持て余してしまいます。

I avoid walking around town for safety reasons, and I tend to lack exercise because I travel by car.

Also, I have a limited number of places to go, so I tend to have too much time on weekends and holidays.

タイやスリランカにいた時、休日はゴルフやスキューバーダイビングをやっていました。

レソトにもゴルフ場はありますがボランティアの身分とゴルフは今さらという気分でやる気にはなれません。

レソトに日本人は少なく一緒に回る相手もいません。

When I was in Thailand and Sri Lanka, I used to play golf and scuba dive on my days off.

There is a golf course in Lesotho, but I am not interested in playing golf because of my volunteer status and the feeling that it is too late for me to play golf.

There are few Japanese in Lesotho, so I have no one to play with.

スキューバーダイビングはレソトに海がないため出来ません。

運動不足解消と時間の有効利用のため、２つのスポーツクラブに所属して運動をしました。

Scuba diving is not possible because there is no ocean in Lesotho.

I joined two sports clubs to exercise and to make the most of my time.

ここは「Lehakoe」スポーツクラブです。

Lehakoeは「光輝く）という意味だそうです。

１つ目のスポーツクラブはレソト教育大学の教職員で作っているスポーツサークルです。

平日はこのサークルに参加しました。

十数名がメンバーになっており、大学内の設備を使ってエクササイズをやりました。

The first is a sports club made up of faculty and staff from the University of Education of Lesotho.

I joined this club on weekdays.

More than a dozen people were members, and we did exercises using the facilities in the university.

「Lehakoe:レハコエ」スポーツクラブのテニス、バレー、バスケット等のコートです。

時々、大学から２～３ｋｍ離れた郊外にある「マセルモール」等へウオーキングをしました。

このサークルに参加したおかげで大学内の様々な人々と知り合う事が出来るメリットがありました。

Sometimes we went walking to "Maseru Mall" in the suburbs, which is 2 to 3 km away from the university.

This club gave me the advantage of getting to know people from different parts of the university.

「Lehakoe:レハコエ」スポーツクラブのエクササイズルームです。

２つ目のスポーツクラブは「Lehakoe:レハコエ」スポーツクラブです。

Lehakoe:レハコエは「光輝く」という意味だそうです。

The second sports club is the Lehakoe Sports Club.

会員制クラブで３ケ月間の料金は１万2千円程です。

平日は朝５時から夜９時まで開館してります。

私はもっぱら土、日の午前中に運動しています。

It is a membership club and the fee for 3 months is about 12,000 yen.

The club is open from 5:00 am to 9:00 pm on weekdays.

I work out on Saturdays and Sundays in the morning.

館外にはテニス、バレー、バスケット等のコートがあります。

There are tennis, volleyball, basketball, and other courts outside the building.

館内には25mのスイミングプールやスカッシュが出来るコートが２ヵ所とさまざまな運動器具が数十台揃っています。

The building has a 25-meter swimming pool, two squash courts, and dozens of pieces of exercise equipment.

運動の後はサウナやミストサウナに入りシャワーを浴びることが出来ます。

 買い物や町中に出掛ける時の足として、車を購入して乗っています。

セキュリティアドバイザーやJICAからも安全確保のため車を使うことを勧められています。

I bought a car and drive it as a leg up when I go shopping and around town.

日本で国際免許証を取得して車の中に置いています。

今までにポリスから免許証の提示を求められたのは一度だけです。

レソトでの交通条件は日本と同じで、車は左側通行ですので違和感なく運転が出来ます。

一般車両の運転マナーは意外に良いと感じます。

しかし、タクシーと小型のバンに乗客を乗せるコンボタクシーには注意が必要です。

彼らは乗客を確保するため、交通ルールは無視します。

They ignore traffic rules in order to secure passengers.

同僚に聞いたところでは運転免許は自動車学校に通ってちゃんと取得するそうです。

車両の整備工場はほとんど見受けられませんでした。

従って、故障は自分で直す必要があります。

The Kingdom of Lesotho (16) Green Apples at the Imperial Store

　日本で食べるリンゴは美味しいが、青いリンゴはあまり食べたことはありませんでした。しかし、レソトに来て青いリンゴをよく食べるようになりました。

I had never really eaten green apples, although the apples I ate in Japan were delicious. However, since coming to Lesotho, I have come to eat green apples more often.

カリカリとした食感と甘酸っぱい味は食べつけると病みつきになりました。

青い小さなリンゴを六等分してから皮をむき、変色を防ぐため塩水に暫く浸けて置き、タッパに入れておき食事のたびに食べています。

The crunchy texture and sweet and sour taste became addictive once I started eating them.

I soak small green apples in salt water for a while to prevent discoloration, then put them in a Tupperware container and eat them with every meal.

従って、20代の半ば過ぎにケニアにいた2年間はアフリカの理容店に行った経験はありませんでした。

For a decade in my twenties, I cut my own hair myself.

日本での散髪代１０００円（私の場合）。

バングラデシュ散髪代５０円（地方での料金）。

タイ散髪代３００円（バンコク）です。

Barbering fee is 500 Japanese yen equivalent for men.

Haircut fee in Japan: 1,000 yen (in my case).

A haircut in Bangladesh is 50 yen (in rural areas).

A haircut in Thailand is 300 yen (Bangkok).

頭皮に沿って地毛をピタッと編み込んだ後、エクステンション用髪を足して長さを出していきます。

After natural hair is tightly braided along the scalp, hair for extensions is added to create length.

散髪代はそれぞれの国の庶民の昼食代金の1.2～1.5倍です。

レソトでの理容料金５００円は若干高いかも知れません。

A barber's fee of 500 yen in Lesotho may be slightly expensive.

レソトでの理容料金が高いのには理由があります。

それは、女性客の場合「散髪は髪を切るとは限らない」からです。

There is a reason why barbering rates in Lesotho are so high.

It is because "a haircut does not always mean a haircut" for female customers.

 

理容店に入った女性客はまず髪型を決めます。

そしてエクステンション用髪を購入します。

When a female customer enters a barber store, she first decides on a haircut.

Then they purchase hair extensions.

パイオニアモールには様々な店舗が入居しています。

１階にある理容店で私は散髪をしています。

I get my haircut at the barber store on the first floor.

店員はエクステンション用髪を結構な時間をかけてお客の地毛と編み合わせていきます。それらから髪を決められた髪型に合わせて整髪していきます。

The staff spends a considerable amount of time weaving the hair extensions together with the customer's natural hair. From there, the hair is then braided into the hair style that has been decided upon.

お客の周りにはエクステンション用髪の残骸が散らばっていきます。

この工程をみているとレソトでの理容料金が高くなるのも無理はありません。

The remnants of the hair extensions are scattered around the customer.

It is no wonder that the barbering rates in Lesotho are so high when you see this process.

しかし、男性客で短い髪を丸坊主にする場合はもっと安くしてもよいと考えます。

そうなると男性客と女性客の理容料金は５～６倍の差が発生してしまいます。

However, we believe that the price could be lower for male customers who want to have their short hair cut into a full head of hair.

This would result in a five- to six-fold difference in barbering rates between male and female customers.

私は職場から歩いて１０分足らずの大学職員用住宅に住んでいます。

風邪をひき土、日と寝込んでいましたが、月曜になっても治らないので寝ていました。

I live in university staff housing less than a 10 minute walk from my office.

I had a cold and was in bed Saturday and Sunday, but it didn't go away until Monday, so I slept in.

最初は普通の握手の仕方で手を握り、次には腕相撲をするように握り替えます。

そして、再び普通の握手の握り方をします。

We first hold hands in a normal handshake manner, then switch grips as if we were arm-wrestling.

Then, again, we hold the hand in the normal way of shaking hands.

握手→腕相撲→握手を１．２．３のタイミングで３秒間程行います。

Shake hands,→ arm wrestle, →and shake hands for about 3 seconds at 1.2.3.

The little birds, perhaps anticipating this, are busy building the next nest.

この写真を撮ったときは誰かを歓迎するために歌とダンスをしているのだと思っていました。

しかし、抗議のため歌を歌いダンスをしているのだと後で知りました。

When I took this picture I thought they were singing and dancing to welcome someone.

However, I later learned that they were singing and dancing in protest.

レソト教育大学の学期末試験も終わり学生たちも学校内にある寮を出てそれぞれ自宅へ帰りました。

学校内も静かになりかけた頃に教職員組合の賃上げ要求闘争が始まりました。

The end-of-term examinations at the Lesotho University of Education were over and the students had left their dormitories and returned to their homes.

Just as things were quieting down at the school, the teachers' union began its struggle to demand higher wages.

レソトの物価上昇率は年間５％程度で最初の賃上げ要求額は５％アップでした。

それに対する回答額は４％でした。

スト突入是非の投票は賛成１３５票、反対４票でスト突入が決まりました。

学校側はそれに対して勤務時間内（8:00-16:00）の学校内立ち入り禁止のロックアウトで対抗しました。

The vote to go on strike was 135 votes in favor and 4 votes against.

The school responded with a lockout of the school during working hours (8:00-16:00).

教職員組合側は学校の校門入口に集まり歌とダンスが始まりました。

歌とダンスは２週間続き最終的には５％の賃上げで妥結しました。

The teachers' union gathered at the school's entrance and began singing and dancing.

The singing and dancing continued for two weeks and eventually resulted in a 5% wage increase.

最近世界各地で行われる抗議には銃や爆弾が使われ死者や負傷者が発生するのが当たり前となってきています。

この事を知って、私はすっかりレソトが好きになってしまいました。
