Run this town meaning.
So I have had a pretty rotten day, and I don't think I could feel much lower. The only people I have in. my life (my family). make me so anxious I cant even talk to them or look them in the face. I know that language learning can be tough, and even tougher if life isn't going well. So I just wanted to let everyone know that if you haven't been able to progress in Japanese that you are not alone. I wanted to learn Japanese because I had been fascinated by Japan since the day in Japanese class in my first year of school when we watched My Neighbor Totoro. In 2010 during the European snow that shut down my country for four weeks I binged Shakugan no Shana, five centimeters per second, and a ton of AMV's on Youtube (my first time ever using Youtube) and I saw such anime as the melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. I felt like I had missed of on the last four years of the world doing nothing but going to school, gaming, and sleeping. I had a sense that I had missed such great times in my life like summer in your second year of high school from Haruhi, but more importantly the only way I might have ever gotten to Japan, a student exchange program. I got really depressed for that winter. The week I finished school I printed a sheet of the hiragana and the katakana and learned them all. I don't know why I did this. I had no way to ever get to Japan, but I had a crazy dream of living there and studying in a university there. So I tried to learn the language. I then went on to download Genki and got completely lost in the face of the massive mountain that was Japanese. At this time I was told I had to repeat my final year of school to get into university. Half way through the year I had to drop out and was informed I had good enough grades for university after all. At this point my family decided to move to the other side of the world like we had been doing every three - six years since I was six months old. I was ecstatic. I was finally out of the countryside, the suburb I was in had a bus to the train station every twenty minutes, and the train was forty five minutes from the city, and an hour from the university I applied and got accepted into. It was going great. I got back into learning Japanese hardcore, and made a lot of friends online from across Asia who also either spoke Japanese or likes Japan as much as I did. Well, turns out that my family couldn't afford to pay for university for two kids at the same time. So the solution was that I had to pay for it myself. Luckily my dad was able to get us jobs making insane money, so for the next six month I worked like crazy until the work ended. I had to wait another six months to start at the next semester. So in this time I did what every nineteen year old with cash did in 2013, I bought an awesome pc and a copy of Final Fantasy XIV A Realm Reborn and made that my entire existence for September that year. When the games free trial period ran out I went to Japan. Mid November with next to no planning I went to Japan for two and a half months. A dream come true for a nineteen year old right? Well I had no Japanese. From my tiny apartment in Sangubashi I would travel around Tokyo to random places I found on google maps. I even went to Kamakura, Enoshima, Chiba, Yokohama, Hakone, Osaka, Kyoto, and to Nishinomiya (the town from Haruhi, yeah, I was that nuts). But for my entire time in Japan I only ever had one single conversation with a Japanese person. Most my days I actually spent in my apartment playing Mario Kart7, super Mario lands, Links awakening two, or Pokemon x on my 3ds. I even waited up on midnight on Christmas day to get my Celebi from Pokebank (which never happened, the servers crashed and they cancelled the launch). And time not spent on the 3ds was spent on the laptop in the corner listening to lets plays by the rooster teeth group over the noise of the construction work next door. I never felt more alone in my entire life. It wasn't just the lack of Japanese. I had no idea what I was even doing there. I had no life skills. I struggled to say hello to other foreigners I saw in my apartment building. And I would have no idea what to say to Japanese people after the first few words of a conversation. Where ever I went to visit I felt out of place as one of the few people alone amongst a sea of school kids and pensioners. I got back home, started university and took Japanese as one of my units for the semester. I lasted four months in university, made next to no friends, and barely passed Japanese, In fact I probably only got the pass grade of fifty so I would pay to do the next semesters course. Well the next semester never happened. I chose the courses, payed the money, and never showed up for one class. Over the next four years whenever I thought of Japanese I would remember my time in Japan and university and feel sad. A friend of mine from high school had also graduated university, gotten fluent in Japanese, and was working in Japan as a JET, which made me feel like trash. But mostly it was regret. I was handed and opportunity that most only dream of and I blew it. I regret it to this day. In fact I'm still trying to learn Japanese follow that dream of going to university in Japan. (The course has to be in English, my Japanese is hopeless). I have tried so many Japanese learning approaches, AJATT, MIA, SGJL, Memrise, Genki, Minna no Nihongo, etc, in these past four years, but the one thing that has hampered me the most is giving up when the world around me tells me to. And that is where I am today. If anybody out there thinks that their idea of going to Japan to study or live is dumb and stupid, it probably is. But if you don't do it you will regret it for the rest of you life. If the people in your life are telling you to go to university to get a degree first, that is probably the smarter move. As the older you get the less options you will have. I know that my dream to live in Japan is most likely fueled from wanting to run away from a bad situation in my current and past life, and a broken family life, but I know that my dream is not as naive as it once was back in 2010 after my anime binge. I have been to Japan, I have seen the society at work, and moving back and forth between cultures allows you to see past the honey moon period. Japan is not perfect, life there wont be perfect, and the country is just like any other in most ways, but its the ways that it differs that makes it worth it. The convenience and utility of the city. Not having your bike or umbrella stolen outside the store. The lining up on the train platform. Those little things. And while in you can walk to Shibuya from Shinjuku surrounded by thousands of people on Saturday, to walking the same street on a week day and it being deserted, the people all at work, part of a society that prioritizes wealth and prestige above all else. The west is becoming the same. Mindless adherence to expectation, existing rather than living, for fear that one small step could see you kicked from paradise or facing the scorn of the many. In a world so afraid to be private and responsible that your persona is all that matters. At least in Japan you can exist outside this in relative comfort. Anyway, If anything I hope this makes others feel better if they have had a tumultuous time with Japanese.

I get chills watching this and listening to this song.
I came up with this list a few days ago of activities you can do with your friends/family remotely. These are more "casual" suggestions that anyone can do with minimal downloads/purchases: ie through a web browser or a game that only one person needs to own. Obviously there are a crapload of video games you can play with friends but I won't bother all listing those here. Most require a means of communication, so I recommend Zoom as you can get it for free- video and audio chat, screensharing, file sharing, text chat and it will automatically cycle the camera of whoever is speaking to the main visibility. It may kick you out every so often unless someone has the full version but should let you rejoin. Various Game Websites/Apps: - Many classics can be played online by googling the name and adding "online" or "multiplayer". Ie- chess, checkers, monopoly, risk, etc - Playing Card Simulator - you can play some pre-determined games or go by your own rules. May take a bit of adjustment to how it works. - The Jackbox Party Pack is an extremely popular online "board game" bundle, with six different packs you can purchase. Everyone plays on their device by going to a website and entering the code. You can have someone screenshare the game on a second computer so all players can see/hear the prompts, answers etc - Jigsaw Puzzles is a multiplayer puzzle-solving site. For those who like slower games that you can just talk to your friends with- you can pick pre-made puzzles, or upload your own images. - Codenames has a freeware version you can start a room with here. - Cards Against Humanity has a free online version you can play with friends. - Skribble is a classic take on online pictionary. Players take turns drawing a random word, and the other players have to guess as it's being drawn. First one to get it right gets the most points, followed by the second etc. You can customize words, number of rounds etc - TripleA is a freeware version of "Axis and Allies" (sort of a very in depth WW2 Risk) that you can play online, with many alternative versions of the map available to download (including star wars and lord of the rings). - Mafia can be set up at this website- assigning roles etc and then you play on Zoom. Alternatively if you have large group you can use Town of Salem and play through text (registration required but I recommend using a dummy email and unusual password as they had a data leak a while ago). Town of Salem doesn't offer private rooms unless you can fill the entire room (15 people). - House Party is a phone app with video chat and multiple games built in) - Many board games also have an app version you can play with friends, either for free or a small fee. Such as Exploding Kittens or even Billiards. - DrawCeption is like Telephone- you take turns drawing and describing the picture through multiple rounds until someone has to guess what the phrase was. There's also a lot of versions of this game available in App form. - Multidraw will give you a space you can draw together with friends- whether you just want to collaborate or to use the space to play drawing games etc thats up to you. Misc Activities: - Trivia Night: Someone comes up with questions, picture, video, audio prompts etc and runs a trivia night. Split the group into teams or individuals, etc. - Jeopardy: You can make your own board here, or find one of millions already premade. Someone can host and keep score of your friends. In lieu of a "buzzer" just have someone type something into the chat and see who comes in first. - Family Feud: People have posted the boards from most seasons online. Just grab some answers and have someone host. Dress up like Steve Harvey. - Netflix Party is a google chrome app that lets you watch netflix synchronized, and with a chat room with friends. - Improv: If your friends are more the dramatic type, search google for an "improv" generator and make your own scenes. Play "scenes from a hat" by punching a bunch of ideas on google or r/scenesfromahat into a randomizer. - Dinner Party. Everyone cook their own meal, and stream it. Share what you've made etc and get your own recipe ideas. - Karaoke: Many people post instrumental versions of songs on youtube- just search and load up. drinks required. Hope some of these ideas help inspire you to stave off the boredom and to stay home!
