A new social media security feature was introduced today at one Indianapolis school to help administrators identify victims of bullying to help keep all students safe.
It’s one of two major efforts going on in Indianapolis this week to help address the growing menace.
Social Net Watcher is a program that monitors what students post online. Students sign up voluntarily for the application that scans and detects dangerous words spread online and then sends a message alerting school administrators. Students or parents can register for Social Net Watcher at a cost of $1 a month to the school.
Words like “kill” and “torment” when spotted by scanning software online get one of the most critical rankings by his program, Canal said, because of research that shows that shows those words are often linked to potential violence. The program sends out three different alerts based on word associations — alerts based violence, the possible threat of suicide and bullying. Each school is responsible for devising its own action plan to deal with such threats.
Today, students at Indianapolis Public Schools’ Shortridge Magnet High School heard about the program created by Plainfield resident and former Indiana State Police Trooper Bruce Canal.
Just two months after its launch, Canal said Social Net Watcher is now in use at six Indiana schools and one school in Tennessee. Even though it sounds promising, he admits it’s difficult at this stage to gauge its success.
More schools in Indiana are taking the issue of cyberbullying seriously after several high-profile cases of students who took their own lives and had reportedly been the victims of online bullying.
Nigel Long, 18, a varsity basketball player and senior at Shortridge, serves as a mentor to sixth-graders — the youngest students at the magnet school of more than 600 pupils.
“I think Shortridge has had its issues with cyberbullying, but more than that, I think the administration is taking a stand to prevent those crazy issues that lead to violence,” Long said.
