Bishop helps school mark a 'wo

THE Bishop of Bristol the Rt Rev Mike Hill has formally opened St Peter's Church of England Primary School in Bishopsworth.

He joined staff, governors, pupils and parents at the school, which was formed by the merger last summer of Highridge Infant and Bishopsworth Junior schools.

The bishop helped them celebrate the successful first year of the school, one of the few church primary schools in south Bristol.

Children performed a hip Rotary hop demonstration, a gymnastics display and sang. Some children also read out the history of the school since it began as Bishopsworth Village School 169 years ago.

Roly the Clown, a vicar who has performed throughout Europe, was also there to entertain the children.

Head teacher Livvy Sinclair-Gieven said pupil numbers had grown from 260 to 309 during the year and pupils were making better than expected progress.

BOMBERS TARGET POLICE

THE dissident threat was heightened yesterday after police watches-V were targeted in a bomb attack in South Armagh.

The blast on Saturday night, which destroyed part of a country road and bridge near Belleek, was described as a callous and blatant attempt to kill and injure policemen.

Police went to the isolated republican stronghold near the border to set up barriers but delayed their forensic probe in case of a follow-up attack.

The PSNI's Supt Pauline Shields said: "We are treating the scene with extreme caution as this was a blatant and callous attempt to kill and injure my officers. The threat to police remains extremely high."

The device exploded under a bridge on the Carrickrovaddy Road between Belleek and Cullyhanna at around 5.30pm but nobody was injured.

Supt Shields said: "We believe there is currently no real risk to members of the public. This is a small, isolated country road. But there is a real risk to my officers. That's why we have to assess the situation and take the right action to keep both the community and my officers safe. However, we are doing everything in our power to keep them safe and to investigate the incident.

"Ultimately those who planted the device are only serving to destroy and disrupt local communities.

There is an ongoing investigation.

However indications at this stage would suggest the involvement of dissident republicans."

Justice Minister David Ford said the explosion was designed to kill and added: "The days of the bomb and the bullet are in the past and thankfully no one was injured in this blast which was an attack on the entire community and designed to kill, maim and frighten."

SDLP Assembly member Dominic Bradley criticised those responsible and said: "It was wrong in the past and it is wrong today. It serves no purpose. The vast majority of people in South Armagh reject this sort of activity."

The last policeman murdered by republican dissidents, Stephen Carroll, was lured to the scene by a distress call in Craigavon, Co Armagh, last March.
