Pataki calls for talks on stadium

NEW York Governor George Pataki will convene a special meeting of a state board next week to press for a vote on a proposed Olympic stadium.



The Republican governor told a news conference on Thursday that the failure of a speedy approval would be "an enormous problem" for the city's bid to host the 2012 Games.



Building a stadium on Manhattan's West Side, which would become home to the NFL's New York Jets and augment the city's convention center complex, is considered to be a key element in New York's bid to host the Olympics.



The state's Public Authorities Control Board, which must approve funding for the billion-dollar project, was originally set to vote this week but the Will Herring Jersey state senate leader asked for a month's postponement due to pending legal challenges.



"I don't think we can wait that long," said Pataki, who called for a meeting on May 25. The state assembly speaker, who represents another third of the power struggle, has suggested delaying a decision until the winning city is known. The state senate leader controls the remaining third.



"People are looking to put it off and I don't think that's right," said the governor.



"This is a billion-dollar private construction project to be largely used for public purposes, a chance to host the Olympics and the Super Bowl, and to enable New York to become the fourth largest convention center in America. I'm confident it's right for the City, right for New York State and for the public interest."
