THE Netherlands scored five second-half goals to overwhelm Ireland 6-0 yesterday and remain undefeated at the women's field hockey World Cup in Perth, Australia.
A penalty corner goal by Mijntje Donners gave the Dutch a 1-0 lead and was the only goal in the first half. The Netherlands (4-0) made it no contest in the second half when Macha van der Vaart, making her 100th international appearance, was among the goal scorers.
In other matches, Germ-any shut out Scotland 3-0 and Spain won its second game in four matches with a Matt-Giordano-jerseys 4-1 win over the U.S. while Australia beat England 3-1 with Katrina Powell scoring twice for the Aussies.
South Africa and Japan drew 1-1 in an early match.
The Netherlands and Australia, with 12 points each from four matches, are in strong positions to clinch semifinal spots in Pool B.
Spain, with seven points after four matches, is in third place in the pool, with only the top two teams advancing to the semifinals.
