Hey! In today's blog I'd like to introduce some smartphone applications for learning English.
Sometimes my students ask me for advice on studying at home, and often want to know a good app they can use. So, I've done some research, looking at different English learning sites, and trying out the applications myself! So here are three apps which were commonly recommended on the net and I thought could help you to learn English!
British Council: Learn English
This application is similar to a radio show, but it has been made for English language learners. There are a lot of different podcasts where you can listen to the presenters' conversations and interviews with guests. I would definitely recommend this one for practising listening and learning natural conversational English.
You can read the script as you listen, and skip back if you want to listen again, or forwards if you want to listen to something else. You can also slow down the speaking speed if you couldn't catch something.
Duolingo
Duolingo is helpful for learning vocabulary and making sentence structures. There are some different kinds of games and tests you can take, and the app follows your progress and will help you review your weak areas. You can start as a beginner, or intermediate. The beginner level is very easy, and starts with simple words and short sentences. The intermediate level starts with a test to check your English and then goes from there.
The only part I don't like is the voice. It is very computerised, so not good for pronunciation practise!
Memrise
This app is just for learning vocabulary, but it is very comprehensive. You can choose from many kinds of courses, such as TOEIC, conversational English, and business, and whether to learn 3, 5, or 7 words a day. For each set of words, you will learn its meaning, pronunciation and spelling through tests and exercises.
Although it was a little difficult to work out how to use at first, I think it gives you a lot of choice of what to study and teaches you very thoroughly.

Typhoons

Hello everyone!
Today, I wanted to talk about this week’s weather and compare it to that of storms in the U.S. This week, we are expecting a couple of typhoons, Tuesday night into Wednesday being the worst with heavy rain and windy conditions. Please take care everyone when heading to work and I will be working tonight, so I am looking forward to seeing those students who have reserved a class with us!
In the U.S, these storms are called hurricanes. Hurricanes are named anywhere from letters a though z, whereas in Japan typhoons are numbered, for example typhoon #16 is expected to arrive today. Some of the names of famous hurricanes include Andrew, Charley, Ivan, and Katrina. The hurricane season began in January of this year whereas the typhoon season began in July.

カラフルハーブティー
レッスン時にお出ししているドリンクメニューにとっても珍しいハーブティーが期間限定で加わりました！

眼精疲労をやわらげたり、免疫力を高めたり、血液循環をスムーズにするなど良い事ずくめ。ブルーベリーに含まれることで有名なアントシアニンも多く含まれていて、抗酸化作用が高くアンチエイジングに最適とのこと。女性に人気なのが納得ですね。
さらに驚くのは、レモンを加えると下記の写真のようにパープルに変化するんです不思議です。

My学習方法
朝晩は過ごしやすくなってきましたね。ただ、9月に入ってから台風が多い気が。16号の進路、気になりますね
さて、わたくしMahoはVOSSで働き始め2ヶ月たちました
（まだまだ不慣れな点も多く、みなさまにご迷惑をおかけしていないか不安です。）
VOSSでは日常的に英語が飛び交う環境。こんな言い方でよかった？とかこの単語で合ってる？など考えることもしばしばです。
と、いうことで英語学習を再スタートしました！と言ってもDVDだったり雑誌だったり、興味関心のある物を英語で見たり聞いたりしてただただインプット。使える
っと思ったものは何度も聞いたりノートに書き写してまる暗記。そして、それを会話でどんどん口に出してアウトプット。

以前、外国の方に日本語を教えていた際、日本語の上達が早い生徒さんに学習方法を聞いたところこの方法を教えてもらいました。
で、はい、パクりました
興味や関心のあることだと楽しんで英語を学べるので苦じゃなくなりますよね。VOSSの日本人スタッフは外国ドラマ好き、洋楽好き、旅行好きなど様々です。他のスタッフもきっと独自の学習方法があるハズ。

NEW DVD

Summer holiday in Russia

Hello everyone!
Last month I went to Russia to visit my family and now I'm finally back in Japan.
It was very exciting to spend some time in my hometown and meet my old friends.
On one of the weekends I travelled almost 300 km to the south to see my grandparents. They live in the countryside, so I spent half of the time there helping them in the garden. My main job was to pick and eat as many fruits and berries as I could, so you might guess it wasn't that hard (at least, the picking part).
I was very lucky during my stay in Russia, because the weather was great most of time: sunny and hot, but not too hot. So I spent lots of time walking the streets of Novosibirsk and going to my favorite places, drinking coffee in the parks and watching beautiful sunsets from my balcony.
Summer in Siberia is short, but really great!

Ice Monster!
It's September now, and it feels like summer is coming to an end... But! The weather is still hot and sunny, so in today's blog I'd like to talk about shaved ice!
Shaved ice is English for 『カキ氷』 and is popular in many different countries.
Recently, me and Reiko (our staff) went to a cafe from Taiwan, which is famous for shaved ice. It has recently opened two shops, one in Toyko and one in Grand Front Osaka. You can read more about their shops here!
We had heard that Ice Monster is so popular that customers sometimes queue for over an hour to eat there! We decided to go during the week, and luckily it was much quieter than on the weekend. There are two areas, seating and standing. Seating had more choice of flavours, but standing we could eat straight away so we did that.
Reiko had the famous Mango flavoured shaved ice and I picked Milk tea. They were both delicious!! Mine had tapioka and Reiko's had lots of mango and mango icecream. I definately recommend Ice Monster while it's still hot and summery!

Norah Jones On Music Station♪

アメリカ出身の人気ジャズシンガー、Norah Jonesが9月9日(金)放送の『ミュージック ステーション』に生出演するというニュースが発表されました
Norahがこの番組に出演するのは、2010年以来で約6年ぶりです
今回は10月5日に日本先行発売されるNewアルバム『デイ・ブレイクス』からリードシングル『Carry On』を披露予定。
テレビでの生パフォーマンスはこれが初！となります
日本で2008年に公開された映画『マイ・ブルーベリー・ナイツ』では主人公を演じ、主題歌も歌っていました
ヒット曲『Don't know why』は癒されるような歌声とメロディーでとても有名ですね
今回はどんな曲なのか、ぜひチェックしてみたいですo(^▽^)o
Katakana English: Shops
Two weeks ago, I introduced some Japanese katakana words which are different to the original English
.
Today, I'd like to show you some more katakana words which are said differently in English.
These are all shop names, and in Japanese the original English word has been shortened.
Unless you say the original word in full, you won't be understood, and the other person might even think you are talking about something else.
Supermarket
The Japanese word 『スーパー』 sounds like the English word "super".
"Super" means "great" or something abnormal like "superpower" or "superman" etc.
If you are travelling and would like to buy some groceries, or souvenirs, make sure you ask:
"Excuse me, where is the supermarket."
Department Store
The Japanese word 『デパート』 sounds like the English word "depart".
This means to "leave". Even if you say "department" this just means "section" or "area", and so you still won't be understood.
If you want to go shopping, make sure you say: "Is there a department store near here?"
Convenience Store
The Japanese word 『コンビニ』 doesn't mean anything in English. So the other person can't even guess what you are trying to say.
If you want to buy snacks or a drink, please say "Are there any convenience stores around here?"
Other words for convenience store are "corner shop" and "newsagent".
