ブラジル・リオデジャネイロの高速道路上に、一面にたくさんの草や木が植えられた緑の草原のような緑橋が架けられた。絶滅危惧種のサル「ゴールデンライオンタマリン」を保護するための橋だ。
A green bridge that looks like a green meadow with many grasses and trees planted all over it was built on a highway in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The bridge was built to protect the Golden Lion Tamarin, an endangered species of monkey.
この種は、ここ数年でわずか２５００匹ほどにまで減っている。主な原因は生息地域である森が高速道路で分断されたことだ。
The number of this species has decreased to only about 2,500 in the last few years. The main reason is that their habitat, the forest, has been cut off by highways.
分断された森をサルたちが自由に行き来できるようとこの橋が建てられた。建設後すぐに橋をわたる森の動物たちの姿が確認されたが、サルたちはまだ確認されていない。もっと緑が茂れば使ってくれるはずだと関係者は言う。
The bridge was built to allow monkeys to move freely through the divided forest. Soon after its construction, animals in the forest were seen crossing the bridge, but not monkeys. If it were greener in the future, they would use it, the official said.
