モンゴルの伝統的かつ非常にポピュラーな文様であるウルジーヘ(Ulzii hee)(Өлзий Хээ)は、幸福が終わることなくいつまでも続くことを願う文様。
元はチベット仏教のモチーフで、モンゴルにチベット仏教が伝来するのと一緒に入ってきたそうだ。
東洋的でありながら、ケルティック・ノットともよく似た、この終わりと始まりが無いループ状の文様は、その構造が生み出すシンプルな美しさと呪術的な強さで永くモンゴルの人々に愛され、受け継がれてきた。
私がウルジーヘに出会ったのは、モンゴルジュエリーのアンティークにそれが使われていたのを見かけたのが最初だと思う。
その後訪れたモンゴルの首都、ウランバートルでは、公共施設の壁や住宅の門から始まって、服やアクセサリー、家具、食品パッケージに至るまで、ウルジーヘを見ない日はなかった。
モンゴル人の友人の家では、彼女の幼い頃の写真が飾ってあったのだか、よくみると、彼女の着るデール(モンゴルの民族衣装)にもウルジーヘの大きめな刺繍が施されていた。きっと彼女のお母さんが子供の幸せを祈りながら刺したものだろう。
厳しい自然の中に生きるモンゴルの人々だからこそ、護符的な役割としての文様は日々必要であったろうし、その思いは切実だったに違いない。
そんな人々の思いの重なりが、ただ美しいだけではない、不思議な魅力を讃えるモンゴルのジュエリーを生み出していったのかなと思う。
このブログでは、ウルジーヘのような、厳しい自然の中に生きるモンゴルの人々が生み出す美のカタチと技と真心を少しづつですがご紹介できたらと考えている。
