Starting off:
I had heard from many people that Saya Kamitani vs Suzu Suzuki was an unbelievable match. I took the time to watch the match with some friends of mine. I felt slightly underwhelmed with this main event. Here is my review:
Buildup To The Match:
The match has an otherwise awkard build. Suzu Suzuki was put in main event match teaming up with Starlight Kid against Saya Kamitani and Momo Watanabe. I feel like it was obvious that Suzu Suzuki was going to pin Saya Kamitani and get herself a title shot. In the following Korakuen Hall, Saya Kamitani and Suzu Suzuki had a weird moment where Suzu was going to lick her shoes, but then bit her foot. My opinion is that this match buildup felt lacking in meaning. I do not think this was feud at a level fit for the World of Stardom championship.
The Match Breakdown:
To start, In the beginning of the match, there was some good strike exchanges and holds. Once they both hit ringside, the match starts falling apart for me. Kamitani grabs a chair and sits in the middle of the ring taunting Suzuki. Then Suzuki grabs herself her own chair and taunts back. They both continue to shout at eachother before they begin to battle again. This is followed by Kamitani pouring water and licking Suzuki's face in a generic heel boast. This is followed by a gruesome sit-out powerbomb on the apron by Suzuki. Suzuki begins to throw her opponent into chairs and spit water on her at the top of the bleachers. I personally found this stretch very boring and dragged out. Fast foward to when they get back into the ring, Suzuki hits Kamitani with a nasty looking avalanche german suplex. This is followed with a few more bridging german suplexes that are all kicked out of by Kamitani. As they continue to wrestle, Kamitani hits a middle rope hurricanrana to Suzuki with great form. Unfortunately, they both exchange poisonranas that come off as innefective and unnecessary. I beleive a poisonrana is not a move that should be shrugged off by mere yelling unless the match, feud and moment are hot enough to call for it. Kamitani picks up the win in her first defense of the Word of Stardom Championship.
Final Thoughts:
The match was suficient as a first defense. I do not think the match was horrible or unwatchable, but rather underwhelmed as I expected more from these two. The match definently could have been better, but nothing to roll your eyes at outside of a few spots. I hope Saya Kamitani's future matches don't have this same formula. The postgame was also really random. Kamitani set up a tag match against Tam Nakano and Sayaka Kurara. If Tam wins, she gets a red belt shot, if Kamitani wins, she takes Kurara to HATE. I don't think Tam Nakano should be challenging for the Red belt. If Cosmic Angels does lose, I think Kurara should actually betray Nakano to not only build up her character and give her momentum, but protect Nakano in the finish. Overall, I was left wanting more.
4/7, lackluster.
