Dating Valco Instruments

Supro

The most effective way to date a Valco guitar or amp is by its serial number. From the ‘40s until 1964, the serial could be found stamped into a small metal plate that was tacked onto the back of the headstock or the back of the cabinet. From 1964-1968, the serial was ink-stamped onto a silver foil sticker that is found in the same place. The following is a key for decoding the serial number, but keep in mind that the numbers are approximate.

SERIAL NUMBERS CIRCA JV + 5 digits 1982-1984 SQ + 5 digits 1983-1984 E + 6 digits 1984-1987 A + 6 digits 1985-1986 B + 6 digits 1985-1986 C + 6 digits 1985-1986 F + 6 digits 1986-1987 G + 6 digits 1987-1988 H + 6 digits 1988-1989 I + 6 digits 1989-1990 J + 6 digits 1989-1990 K + 6 digits 1990-1991 L + 6 digits 1991-1992 M + 6 digits 1992-1993 N. Supro 'Comet' lap steel - Ser. #X43742.that serial number should make it a 1953 model - The tuners have been replaced with a very vintage-looking set of Gibson tuners (see photo) - Everything works on this lap steel.the pickup works just fine.the volume and tone controls work as they should - Includes a 10 ft. Cable with the special screw-on connector (see photo). Supro lap steels are dated the same way as National and other Valco-made steels. For the most part, they have a small metal plate on the back of the neck, on the opposite side of the neck from the nut. The serial number on that plate can be used to determine the year the guitar was made. Clay Harrell's web site includes the Valco serial number. Vtg SUPRO Electric Guitar 1964-68 SUPER SEVEN Short Scale Guitar HOLLY RED With Original Case, and strap. AWESOME ESTATE FIND! SUPER RARE RED MODEL! The serial number is 1-27126. The #1 indicates manufacturing of 1964-68. In Good vintage condition, some minor age. The red body looks good! Only a few minor scuffs.

The serial number is located on the neck plate on the back of the guitar. The year of manufacture is determined in the same way for the Swamp Ash Special as for the CE and EC. The next number, after the year number, determines the model (8 or SA) for the SA-models and then the sequential order of that year.

*'A' and 'C' prefixes also occur in some pre-1936 serials.

However, some of these plates and many of these stickers have disappeared over time. Often the speaker codes or potentiometer codes can help, assuming that these parts are original and legible. Pot codes can be decodedhere, and speaker codes can be decoded here. For dating pre-Valco acoustic instruments, see this page.

Been trying to get some information about this Supro Dualtone. Not much info about Supro on the interweb.. And they seemed to change radically every year - Rainer Ptacek's 1964 Supro Dualtone, for example bears little relation to my instrument (apart from the pickups??).
Never fear, everything I need is already on the MM Forum - using search I've found all this below - just wanted to sense check it is correct.
I believe this is an original Supro Dualtone with a wooden body and two single coil pickups. It seems completely identical to the one played by Ry Cooder on the sessions for 'Safe As Milk' with Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band in late 1966/67.
Searching the forum I found a link to the National/Valco/Supro serial number dating here
www.provide.net/~cfh/national.html
The serial is T2452 which dates it as 1958 (I think)
www.provide.net/~cfh/national.html#valco
For a 51 year old guitar it is in amazing condition, especially as it has no (observable) truss rod. The pickups and electrics appear original as does the Supro case it came in.
And as for the sound, it absolutely wails..
I found this picture of Link Wray playing a similar Supro Dualtone instrument
Finally, I found this post of a 1958 Supro Catalogue page, which has a pic of a similar guitar to mine, link was buried deep within the MM Forum.
Only difference is that the catalogue shows one with golden plated parts - mine has a gold bit on the tailpiece, but everything else is chrome.
Here are some pics of mine.
