A small country a country to be proud of

This summer, I had a study abroad experience in the United States for two weeks. Through this experience, I was able to think about my country, Japan.

While staying with an American family, my Russian roommate said,"Of Japan I know only Tokyo." A Saudi Arabian boy said,"I do not have an image of Japan." Then,I was very shocked and noticed my fixed idea for the first time.

I thought that Japan was a very big country. Because its gross domestic product is the third largest in the world, it has advanced technology and associates with many countries in trade. As the United States is known in the world, I thought that everyone in the world also knew Japan by its history, culture and economic power. But that was my misconception. Because I live Japan, I couldn’t see any county except Japan and could think of nothing expect Japanese things.

I went to Universal Studios Hollywood. The place was very large and there were nature and buildings that I had not seen in Japan. I realized the vastness of the United States and felt as if it represented the entire earth. There were people of various countries and many languages were spoken as well as English. I was very surprised at the large number of Chinese and realized the size of the Chinese influence in the world. On the other hand, I felt the small number of Japanese was enough to count in a moment. This showed me the ture position of Japan in the world today.

When there was a word I couldn’t understand in class. I looked it up in an electronic dictionary. A European boy talked to me. Admiring the function of the Japanese electronic dictionary, he gave me a compliment, “This is truly Japanese technology.” I knew the Japanese medical care and scientific technique to be among the highest in the world. But it was not until I heard it from a foreigner that I became proud of Japanese technology being so impressive.

When I came back from school, I wanted to say “Tadaima” to my host family, but I wasn’t able to express it in English. Then my host mother said “Hello”. The meaning of “Hello” was only “konnichiwa” for me. But I was impressed by the depth of meaning of “Hello”, when said in various situations. However, I found Japanese, which has appropriate greetings for every situation, every attractive.

My world opens more and changes a lot of by going to a place that I don’t know. I can know the good points of countries that I went to and those of my own country and at the same time also know their bad points. I learned that in just two weeks. And I became full of desire to see more countries in the world. There must be many people who only think of Japanese like former me. And there must be many people who aren’t aware of many wonderful things about Japan. I think that it is a waste to have only the impression or image of a foreign country. And it’s a waste only to know about our own small country, Japan. In the future, I want to tell many people about many countries and do work that will let many people know the good points of Japan that I am proud of. I will improve my English more and more and visit many countries in order to fulfill my dream.
