Otagi-ji Temple 1,200 of Rakans /愛宕念仏寺(おたぎねんぶつじ)

The temple was first built in the Otagi District (The central part of present-day Kyoto) by order of Emperor Shotoku in the latter half of the 8th century.
At the beginning of the Heian period (794-1192), the temple
building was washed away when the Kamo River flooded. The temple was reestablished by Senkan Naigu (918-984), a priest of the Tendai sect, and became a branch of Enryakuji, the Tendai temple complex on Mt. Hiei.
Over a period of three years beginning in 1922, the temple
was transfered to its present location in the Saga District, in
order to preserve it.
The temple has a wonderful array of 1,200 carved stone
figures of Rakan (disciples of Shaka, the founder of Buddhism) made by people from various parts of the country from 1981 to 1991 for the reconstruction of the temple.

「愛宕念仏寺（おたぎねんぶつじ）の歴史」
今の京都の四条の西院から東山方面にかけてを昔は愛宕郡と言い、奈良時代の末（今から約1240年前）に聖武天皇の娘の称徳天皇がここに寺を建てました。愛宕(おたぎ)の地に建てられたので愛宕寺と言いました。
ところが平安時代の初めに、鴨川の洪水で全て流れて廃寺となってしまいます。その復興を命じられたのが天台宗の僧　千観 (918～984) です。千観さんは、いつも念仏を唱えていたので、民衆から念仏聖人とよばれ、このことから寺名を愛宕念仏寺とよばれるようになりました。

本堂(重要文化財)は鎌倉中期の再建によるもので、大正11年に堂宇の保存のため、嵯峨の地へ移築されました。また、昭和56年、寺門興隆を祈念して、境内を羅漢の石像で充満させたいと発願し、10年後の平成3年に「千二百羅漢落慶法要」を厳修しました。
本尊は「厄除千手観音」。平安時代より厄除けの寺として厚く信仰されています。

日本で最も有名な寺院の一つではないでしょうか？
鹿苑寺（金閣寺）は足利義満によって建立された室町前期の北山文化を代表する建築です。1950年に放火によって一度焼失したために、1955年に現在の建物に再建されています。1994年にはユネスコの世界文化遺産「古都京都の文化財」の構成資産として指定されました。疑う余地なく、日本が誇る重要文化財のひとつですね！
（修学旅行で行った時には何も感じなかったのに、歳をとった今見るとものすごく感動しますね。。。不思議ですね。）

北海道三大秘湖の一つであるオンネトーの秋景色です。オンネトーとはアイヌ語で「年老いた沼」という意味があるそうです。美しい紅葉の赤と深く澄んだ湖の色のコントラストが本当に美しいですね。

囲炉裏のある風景。きっと昔は当たり前だったこの景色も今の私たちにはすごく珍しく目に映ります。冬には囲炉裏の周りに人が集まってきて、食事をしながら楽しい時間を過ごしていたのでしょうね。。。

This amazingly beautiful terraced rice field named "HOSHI TOUGE = Star hill" is nominated for top 100 Japan home village. We visited this place for attending ECHIGO-TSUMAARI ART TRIENNALE 2012. It's little bit far to go but worth seeing!!
