Tobe-yaki "Soba-chyoko". The history is very long and the first invention was roughly 300years back from now. First made in Imari-area (western Saga-prefecture) and was spread to many potter of whole country together with Soba-boom in 1700s. Originally this was used for Soba-eating (for dipping noodle sauce) but gradually widen its field to drinking cup and bawl. Sometimes for plant pot.
Some people says this Soba-Chyoko as a King of Utsuwa (cup/bawl/glass) because it can be used for anything. And recently some Japanese young people like to use this because of its simpleness, usefulness and cool shape, various design!!!
Today is "節分: seasonal division day" is the day before the beginning of Spring in Japan.
This Spring is in association with the Lunar New Year, and we have traditional custom to throw the roasted beans to the family member who is wearing ONI (demon) mask!! Demon is symbolized evil and people says "Demons out! Lucks in!" and throw beans! So we call this festival as "throwing beans festival". Our family is doing the same and she is pretending as ONI! And her name is "mame = beans". So most suitable role for her!!
