The bar chart provides information about the popular sports in New Zealand in 2002 among boys and girls. Although there isn’t much difference in the total number of sports participants, it can be seen clearly that there are noticeable gaps in their preferences.
Athletics, basketball and tennis have popularity among both of them. Five percent of girls participate in Athletics, as opposed to 4% of boys. Tennis and basketball have almost the same figure at approximately 10%, with boys participants little higher.
Turning to the differences in their preferences, cricket and netball have striking gap between them. Few girls takes part in cricket, compared to over 10% of boys, while boys don’t have liking to netball in contrast with a quarter of girls. Swimming is also more common among girls, whereas martial arts among boys.
Overall, although the preference among boys and girls differs in some sports, in total almost the same percent of boys and girls join sports activity.
