留学前に一度読んだのだけれど、
味のある本だったのでまた読み返していたのです。

それよりも、
おれが一番心に残ったMorrie先生の「波のお話」

" I heard a nice little story the other day," Morrie says.
He closes his eyes for a moment and wait.
"Okay. The story is about a little wave, bobbing along in the ocean,
having a grand old time. He's enjoying the wind and the fresh air - until he notices
the other waves in front of him, crashing against the shore.
"'My god, this is terrible,' the wave says. Look what's going to happen to me !'
"Then along comes another wave. It sees the first wave, looking grim, and it says to him,
'Why so you look so sad?'
"The first wave says, ' You don't understand ! We're all going crash ! All of us waves are
going to be nothing ! Isn't it terrible?'
"The second wave says, ' No you don't understand. You're not wave, you're part of the ocean.'"

いろんな解釈があると思いますが、僕自身が得た教訓はこんな所。
小さい波が海の一部であるように、
僕らも個人も社会を構成している一人でしかない。
小さい波がどんだけ派手に海岸に打ちのめされても、
大海原がいとも簡単にそれを吸収してしまうように
若いうちの失敗や挫折なんて社会から見れば大したものでもないし、
個人が思っている程みんなが見ているわけでもない。
たしかに、いくらでも失敗していいというのは
たとえ若かろうが「甘え」や「無責任」と言われるかもしれない。
だけど、僕らが持っている価値なんて「若さ」しかないんだから、
その特権を使う手はないんじゃないかと、そう素直に思うわけです。
多少海を汚しちゃってもいいから、派手に海岸に打ちのめされるような、
そんな経験を重ねていきたいですね。
年を重ねていったら、海岸に打ちのめされた波をいくらでも
受け入れられる海のように、でっかい人間でありたいものです。
だって、波がない海なんて、循環がなくなって、ただ濁っていくだけでしょ。
波にたくさん失敗させる海は、きっとキレイなんでしょうな。
