et parfaite.Summer wedding season is just around the corner, and designer TracyReese has one key rule when it comes to dressing for such occasions:"Dress to shine," she says. "It shows your support of the celebration. You should totally be festive and gorgeous—not somber."
Ms.Reese, who first made her name as a designer of feminine, flirtydresses, notes that she generally doesn't wear black to a wedding. Shechooses a bold color such as deep red, dark purple or orchid. "It'shappier," she says. She also tries to avoid wearing a color that is atheme in the wedding. "I don't think you should be trying to look likeyou're one of the bridesmaids," she says.
For afternoon weddings, Ms. Reese will typically pick a floralchiffon dress that ends around the knee—"something floaty andromantic," she says. She sometimes wears patterned maxi dresses—longer, flowing wedding dresses made of a light fabric like silk chiffon—but other thanthose, she says, "I don't want to wear a long dress unless it'sdefinitely a formal event."
Even for nighttime weddings, sheusually wears a dressy cocktail frock. "That tends to be a bit moremodern" than a long gown, she says.
At black-tie events, sheusually keeps jewelry to a minimum but picks a dress with a littlerhinestone or feather detail at the bodice to help her ensemble standout—it can even be a conversation starter. "If you don't know plenty ofpeople there, sometimes your outfit can help you meet new people," shenotes.
Ms. Reese is careful to keep her look polished whenattending a daytime wedding. "Don't carry your big day bag," she warns.Instead, she makes sure to carry "a smart clutch" and looks for shoesthat are refined rather than casual or beachy, choosing metallic shadesor shoes embellished with stones, for example.
For nighttimeweddings, shoes have to be suitably dressy, too. A shoe with a printedpattern, she notes, "seems very 'day.' " She also tries not to wearheels that are more than three inches high. "The shoe has to be foxybut not so tall that you can't stand on it for four hours," she says.
Anotherrule that Ms. Reese says she sticks to at weddings: "Anything tooshort, too low-cut or wretchedly tight is in bad taste." She adds:"That's not just a wedding thing. It's a life rule."
Whileminiskirts are in vogue, Ms. Reese feels that any dress above mid-thighis too short for a wedding. "Four inches above the knee" is as high asshe'll let her hemline go.
No matter what she wears, she makessure to bring a good attitude to the wedding. "When people see youlooking great and festive and happy, then they just want to join in thefun."

President Barack Obama wanted to put a human face on his plans to overhaul health care, and a Virginia supporter did just that Wednesday. Fighting back tears, Debby Smith, 53, told Obama of her kidney cancer and her inability to obtain health insurance or hold a job.
The president hugged her — she's a volunteer for his political operation — and called her "exhibit A" in an unsustainable system that is too expensive and complex for millions of Americans.
"We are going to try to find ways to help you immediately," he told Smith as hundreds looked on at a community college forum — and countless others watched on television. But the nation's long-term needs require a greater emphasis on preventive care and "cost-effective care," he said.
With skin cancer rates on the increase, most individuals know the importance of applying sunscreen regularly, but in a recent literature study published in the July/August issue of Sports Health: A Multidisciplinary Approach, athletes may be even more at risk for developing the deadly disease.
"Studies further confirm that although exposure to the sun or UV light may help maintain vitamin D levels, exposure also results in a higher risk for developing skin cancers. This is especially true of summer and winter outdoor athletes, who are exposed to higher amounts of UV light due to training and competition schedules. Sun protection strategies, including sunscreens and sun protective clothing, may help to reduce this risk for athletes," said author Wilma Bergfeld, MD, Senior Staff, of the Department of Dermatology at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
The researchers also pointed out that some athletes are at an increased risk of sunburn because of their training schedules and conditions, with obviously those individuals who compete in summer sports being at significantly increased exposure. They noted, for example that during the Tour de Suisse cyclists were exposed to approximately eight times more than the minimal dose of UV needed to cause sunburn.
"Summer athletes are not the only ones in danger of higher skin cancer rates. In winter sports (eg, skiing, snowboarding), higher altitude sun exposure and reflections off the snow and ice, can lead to even greater exposures, especially to the face and hands. One of the studies we sited, noted that skiers without sunscreen at 11,000 feet begin to develop sunburn after only six minutes of UV exposure," said Bergfeld. The research also highlighted that coaches and trainers may be at increased risk because of similar exposures.
