Wait, what? Yeah, you heard me right. Your skin type might not matter as much as you think. I have spent quite some time researching skin care, skin types and different products to come to this conclusion. It all boils down to just one base factor. But more on this in a minute. I'll talk a bit about my skincare journey first.
I started, like most girls, to care about my skine, when the first few spots started appearing. Fortunately I never had severe acne. My skin was slightly oily and mostly unproblematic. I used whatever I felt like and got mostly the same results with everything. Troubles started when I turned 25. My skin turned dry, but still had enlarged pores, blackheads and whiteheads. Also because it was so dry, scaling and wrinkles were a daily problem. If I used products against dryness, they caused breakouts; but fighting the breakouts caused excessive dryness. My skin was in a horrible condition. At that time I discovered Dr. Baumann and her theory of the 12 skintypes. Her recommended regimen helped, but I still strugled with too dry or too oily skin and had to constantly switch between products to keep my skin balanced. It wasn't ideal. However through her I found the one factor that really matters. This factor is is wether your skin is resistant or sensitive.
With resistant skin you'll hardly have reactions to harsh cosmetics (besides occasional dryness, if your skin is on the drier side). Rashes and redness are something you rarely see. The downside is, that most products are actually not "harsh" enough for you. Your skin doesn't react to gentle doses of ingredients.
Sensitive skin on the other hand, reacts to a lot of things and will have to slowly get accustomed to most ingredients.
Both groups can (and should) use the same products, but if your skin is sensitive start slowly. Introduce products one at a time. And sometimes skip days if your skin reacts with redness.
Why is it, that everyone needs the same products? Because skin is still skin. As we age, what happens in our skin is the same for everyone. Oilier skin tends to show signs of aging later, but it's still happening. So when should you start an anti aging regimen. Right now! There is no point when you're skin just decides to get old. Ideally you start as early as possible, because once aging signs are visible you can only hide them, not remove them. Even though cosmetic products like to tell you otherwise.
What you need for great skin:
- gentle cleanser
- vitamin c serum
- hyaluronic acid
- salicylic acid
- glycolic acid
- retinol
- good sunprotection
I'll create some in-depth posts, about those things and will also make a post about my current regimen in the future, so stay tuned!
