Sad news about the passing of soul-jazz guitar master Phil Upchurch. Found this flyer that was tucked inside the vinyl—back in 2001, a double bill with Jimmy Smith and Lou Donaldson! I was right up front, glued to Phil as he played that beautifully seasoned guitar in Jimmy’s quartet.
After the show, I had a chance to talk with him. He spoke passionately about what he was working on at the time and about an upcoming album set that was about to be released.
When I pulled out one of my favorite albums of his, he lit up—“Hey man!!”—and signed it with such joy.
One of my treasured memories from my New York days.
Rest in peace Phil.
ソウル・ジャズギターの名手、フィル・アップチャーチ逝去の悲しい知らせ。レコードに入ってたチラシ発見。2001年、ジミースミスとルードナルドソンのダブルビル！でジミーのカルテットでいぶし銀のギターを弾くフィルを目の前でかぶり付いた。
演奏後話ができ、今取り組んでることやら発売されるアルバムセットやら熱く聞かせてくれた。
大好きなこのアルバムを出すと「Hey man~!!」とめっちゃ嬉しそうにサインしてくれた。
ニューヨーク時代の大切な思い出の一つ、、合掌。
