Hello everybody!  Today, we will start a series of posts which focus on adjectives.  We would like all students to expand their vocabulary and try to use new, more specific words in conversation.  These new adjectives could also help you prepare for tests like the Eiken test or TOEIC.

Today's word is obsolete.  Please read at the dictionary definition below:

obsolete (adj.) no longer produced or used; out of date.

We often use this word to describe technology that was common in past generations but we don't use anymore.  For example, I used to love my VCR, and I watched so many VHS tapes when I was a kid.  However, nobody uses them today!  We watch movies online or some people might still watch DVDs.

Do you know any examples of obsolete technology?  Please talk about this topic with us at BRIDGE.

Hello everybody!  It has been a while since our last blog post, but we hope you are enjoying spring and preparing for the hot summer ahead.

Today, our topic is the influential music composer, Terry Riley.  Most of you probaly don't recognize this name, but he has inspired many great musicians around the world including Pete Townshend from the Who, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and many more.  He is currently 88 years old and will turn 89 next month, but age hasn't stopped him from performing, recording, and teaching.  Surprisingly, he now lives near the town of Kobuchizawa in Yamanashi Prefecture.

At the very beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in February 2020, Riley came to Japan to perform on Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture.  He only planned on staying in Japan for about 6 weeks, but it became too dangerous to travel in March of 2020.  Therefore, Riley decided to stay in Japan until the situation became safer.

During that time, Riley started to realize that rural Japan was extremely beautiful, and he became inspired by the nature and culture of local towns.  He continued to write music while enjoying the countryside.  After several months of this new lifestyle, he made a very bold decision to continue living in Japan... until his death!

He eventually moved to Yamanashi in order to access Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka more easily but also enjoy beautiful mountains and serene, natural beauty.  Riley often performs and collaborates with artists in Japan and has began teaching many people in Japan his philosophy about music.  It seems to be a great exchange- Japan inspires Riley and Riley inspires Japanese people.

The composer is currently healthy, and we all hope that he has many years left to share his musical knowledge and enjoy the culture of Japan.  Please follow this link below to see a legendary performance from Riley in the 1970's.

Hey everybody!  We hope that you are enjoying spring so far, and of course, please go outside and see the cherry blossoms before it's too late.

Today, I'd like to introduce a great young athlete in America who is getting a lot of attention these days.  Of course, everybody knows Shohei Ohtani and Rui Hachimura.  However, have you ever heard of Keisei Tominaga?  He is a college basketball player, and he attends the University of Nebraska.  Also, he's from Nagoya!!!  His hometown is Moriyama-ku, but now, he lives in the middle of the United States and is far away from big cities like NYC, LA, and Chicago.

Nevertheless, he is becoming a little famous in America because his style of basketball is extremely exciting.  He is a great 3-point shooter and is super quick on the court.  Many people are comparing him to the NBA player Steph Curry.  His nickname is actually "Japanese Curry!"  Anyway, if you get a chance, please look at his highlights online.  Tominaga might lead his team to a national championship in the near future!

Thanks for reading and feel free to talk about sports and Japanese athletes with us at BRIDGE.  Take care!
