Hello everybody!  I hope that you had a wonderful Golden Week.  It has been a bit rainy at the beginning of May, but the temperature feels very comfortable.  Enjoy this weather before it gets too hot in the summer!  Today, we would like to study and explore the history of a special company that has its roots right here in Nagoya.

Hoshino Gakki Co., Ltd. is a Japanese company that makes musical instruments, and it has an interesting story. It started in 1908 when Matsujiro Hoshino opened a bookstore called Hoshino Shoten in Nagoya. In the 1920s, the company started selling musical instruments, especially Spanish guitars. This was the beginning of what would become a big name in both guitar and drum making. By 1935, Hoshino began making guitars under the Ibanez brand, named after a Spanish guitar maker, and shifted from just selling instruments to making them.

In the years after World War II, Hoshino Gakki grew and began selling products internationally, especially in the United States in the 1960s. The company became famous in the 1970s and 1980s because of Ibanez guitars, which became popular with musicians like Steve Vai and Paul Gilbert. In 1974, Hoshino also started making drums under the Tama name, which became known for being strong and innovative. Today, with its headquarters in Nagoya, Hoshino Gakki continues to be one of the most respected companies in the music world, with production in Japan and other countries.

Do you play an Ibanez guitar or Tama drums?  Do you play any musical instruments?  Please feel free to talk to your teachers about music when you come to Bridge again.  Have a great day!

Hello everybody.  Spring is officialy here, and now, the weather is starting to get warmer.  Please enjoy the comfortable temperatures before summer comes.

Today, we have some very exciting news for y'all.  We are very close to confirming that Earth is not the only planet in the universe with life!

Scientists using the James Webb Space Telescope have discovered signs that there might be living beings on a planet outside our solar system called K2-18 b. They found two chemicals, dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), in the planet’s atmosphere. On Earth, these gases are usually produced by living things, like tiny ocean organisms such as plankton. This makes scientists think that K2-18 b could be home to microbial life. However, they’re being careful not to say they’ve found actual life yet. They still need to do more observations to be sure, as there could be other explanations for the gases.

K2-18 b is a "hycean" world, which means it might have oceans covered by warm water, and scientists think that life could exist there in the form of tiny microbes. The planet is in a special zone around its star where liquid water can exist, making it a good place for life to thrive. This discovery is exciting because it is the first hint that we might not be alone in the universe. But scientists are cautious and want to do more research before making any big claims. They hope that, in a few years, we may have more proof of life on planets far beyond our own.

Please tell us what you think of this amazing scientific breakthrough when you come to BRIDGE.

Hello everbyody!  Although the weather has recently turned a bit cold in Nagoya, we hope you are enjoying cherry blossom season.  Everything is almost in full bloom so please take time to enjoy the beautiful scenery before the cherry blossoms disapper.

Today, we would like to disucss a technological innovation that will drastically change our lives in the years to come.

The way we listen to music and sounds has changed a lot over time. Today, we have high-tech, noise-canceling earbuds that let us hear music clearly. In the future, we might not even need headphones at all! Scientists are testing a new technology that can send sound directly to one person without others around them hearing it. This means we could have private conversations in public without anyone listening in.

A team of researchers at Penn State University in the USA created this technology, called "audio enclaves." It works by using special sound waves that people can’t hear while they travel through the air. These waves can also bend around objects to reach the right person.

Lead researcher Jiaxin Zhong explained that this is like creating a "virtual headset." Only the person inside the audio enclave can hear the sound. This could be useful in many ways. Museums could give visitors audio guides without headphones. People in the same car could listen to different music without bothering each other. Businesses could use this to keep conversations private. Stores could even send special ads to customers as they walk by. This technology could also help make workplaces quieter by reducing noise.

What do you think about this?  Please feel free to talk to your teachers at BRIDGE about audio enclaves and other types of state-of-the-art technology in your classes.
