Pessimistic person doesn't hope for a better future neither do something to achieve it. When he comes across certain problem, he doubts his ability to overcome it preventing hope and possibilities.
According to what i read, people can waste years, even their whole lives, because of pessimism.
So yea, it is indeed a disastrous thing. (x_x；)
