How Often Should I Study English?

Many students are looking for a "magical number" that will tell them how often they need to study. However, the answer is actually quite simple. There are two answers to this question and you have to pick the one that matches your style. Everybody learns at a different pace, so it makes sense that some may need to study longer than others to learn the same thing. Without wasting any time, let's reveal the two answers.

1. Everyday

For some of us, we should be studying English everyday. Our brains are very powerful and capable of remembering so much information. Think of your brain like a muscle, the more you use it, the stronger it gets. Here is a list of ideas for studying English everyday:

- Review flashcards on your commute

- Finish one page in your textbook

- Write a daily diary

- Record a daily diary (audio or video)

- Listen to English music

- Watch an English movie / TV show

- Read a few pages of an interesting book

- Post on a language exchange site

- Call a friend and talk on the phone

- Play an online game with foreigners

- Use an English learning app on your phone

- Watch YouTube

- Go to a bar, party, or event with foreigners

- Join an English School

- Take online lessons

There are more than 7 options in that list. This means you could pick one of those things and do ONE everyday. Of course, having speaking practice with EigoTomato is the best option, but I want to give you some alternatives. ;)

When studying everyday, it's OK if you don't remember EVERYTHING that you study. The point is to constantly and consistently fill your brain with knowledge. What's cool is that your brain will start to remember patterns or words subconsciously, and as you keep studying more things will start to "click", and you will feel like you're learning a lot.

But, let's say you are busy....you don't have time to study everyday. Then let's move on to option number two.

2. Scheduled Study

Now, I have mixed feelings about scheduling a set time for studying. On one hand, it can be a great way to force yourself to make time to study and get into a habit of studying on a regular basis. However, if you are busy with work or your personal life and you miss a day, then you might keep changing your "study schedule". In the end, you wind up not studying as much as you originally had planned.

If you want to give this option a try then set a certain time and day every week for studying. For example:

Monday from 20:00 - 21:00

Wednesday from 13:00 - 15:00

Saturday from 17:00 - 18:30

You pick the times and dates that best fit your schedule. Another important tip is to pick times when you know your brain is at its peak performance. What does this mean? Simply, if you notice you have the most energy from 10:00 - 12:00 that's when you should study. If you are the type of person who has lots of energy from 19:00 - 21:00, then that's when you should study. Everybody is different so just pick something that is comfortable for you and ensures you will have time to study.

The most important tip is that you need to be studying or absorbing English content.

Listening to English.

Reading in English.

Watching something with English.

https://englishhub.jp/englishschool

This is a lovely site that lists A FEW of the available English teaching companies in Japan. There are even more than this, and new ones seem to be popping up every month. How do you decide which one is the best???

Don't Be Sold To

Every school you go to has a "manager" and every company has "sales staff". From the moment you walk in, their job is to convince you to join their school/program. Every school has a "gimmick" that tries to demonstrate how their school is better than their competitor's.

Graphs, starting times, teacher certificate's,

curriculum, "variety of teachers", text book, pricing, etc. etc. etc.

Those are all gimmicks!

Check Reviews!

NO.

Why not?

Reviews are based on other student's experience. The reason why reviews are not a good indicator for a company is because their learning experience should be different from yours.

Not everyone is at the same level of English, right?

Not everyone has the same goal for English, right?

Not everyone studies the same way, right?

You can't base your decision on someone else's experience when it comes to your education.

So, what should you do? How can you decide?

1. Teachers

You need to know who is going to be teaching you. Here are some very important questions you should be asking the teachers during your visit or trial lesson.

  • Are they easy to understand?
  • Are they boring?
  • How long have they been teaching?
  • Are they engaging?
  • Do they understand your goals?
  • How are they going to teach you?
  • Do they work overtime?
  • How many students do they have?
  • How long have they been working with this company?
  • What do they like most about the company?
  • What would they like to improve in the company?

These questions will help you learn the truth about a company and the type of experience you will have as a student. A company that takes care of their teachers means the teachers will take care of you.

2. Time

Learning English takes time and the only way you will be consistent in showing up for lessons is if the company offers you a flexible schedule.

Free only on Thursday and Friday nights? Are they available?

Need to study more than 4 times a month? Do they have affordable options?

Learning English is like exercising. There are many FREE options for staying healthy and exercising, but some people prefer paying for a gym membership. Going to the gym is all about your motivation to make time every week and do your best. Some people prefer to pay for a personal trainer to save time learning by themselves and have somebody to motivate them.

With English, there are SO MANY free options. You should only be paying for a school or lessons if you can't motivate yourself to learn on your own.

In Summary...

...you need to really think about what a company is offering you. If you're having to pay huge amounts of money up front, chances are they are hoping you lose motivation and stop coming to the school. How many people have paid for gym memberships, but then stopped going to the gym? Many companies just want your money, but they don't really care about your English learning journey. If a company has to convince you that their school is the best or why other options are"bad", they're only focus is on sales and numbers. They don't really care about you as a student or your needs.

Talk to the teachers, find the ones you think you can learn a lot from, and find a place where you can get the most time.

Remember, you can get a haircut for ¥1,000 or ¥20,000. The difference that separates their value is the skill of the hairdresser/barber.
