How Often Should I Study English?
Many students are looking for a "magical number" that will tell them how often they need to study. However, the answer is actually quite simple. There are two answers to this question and you have to pick the one that matches your style. Everybody learns at a different pace, so it makes sense that some may need to study longer than others to learn the same thing. Without wasting any time, let's reveal the two answers.
1. Everyday
For some of us, we should be studying English everyday. Our brains are very powerful and capable of remembering so much information. Think of your brain like a muscle, the more you use it, the stronger it gets. Here is a list of ideas for studying English everyday:
- Review flashcards on your commute
- Finish one page in your textbook
- Write a daily diary
- Record a daily diary (audio or video)
- Listen to English music
- Watch an English movie / TV show
- Read a few pages of an interesting book
- Post on a language exchange site
- Call a friend and talk on the phone
- Play an online game with foreigners
- Use an English learning app on your phone
- Watch YouTube
- Go to a bar, party, or event with foreigners
- Join an English School
- Take online lessons
There are more than 7 options in that list. This means you could pick one of those things and do ONE everyday. Of course, having speaking practice with EigoTomato is the best option, but I want to give you some alternatives. ;)
When studying everyday, it's OK if you don't remember EVERYTHING that you study. The point is to constantly and consistently fill your brain with knowledge. What's cool is that your brain will start to remember patterns or words subconsciously, and as you keep studying more things will start to "click", and you will feel like you're learning a lot.
But, let's say you are busy....you don't have time to study everyday. Then let's move on to option number two.
2. Scheduled Study
Now, I have mixed feelings about scheduling a set time for studying. On one hand, it can be a great way to force yourself to make time to study and get into a habit of studying on a regular basis. However, if you are busy with work or your personal life and you miss a day, then you might keep changing your "study schedule". In the end, you wind up not studying as much as you originally had planned.
If you want to give this option a try then set a certain time and day every week for studying. For example:
Monday from 20:00 - 21:00
Wednesday from 13:00 - 15:00
Saturday from 17:00 - 18:30
You pick the times and dates that best fit your schedule. Another important tip is to pick times when you know your brain is at its peak performance. What does this mean? Simply, if you notice you have the most energy from 10:00 - 12:00 that's when you should study. If you are the type of person who has lots of energy from 19:00 - 21:00, then that's when you should study. Everybody is different so just pick something that is comfortable for you and ensures you will have time to study.
The most important tip is that you need to be studying or absorbing English content.
Listening to English.
Reading in English.
Watching something with English.
