Grantham（グランサム）

　グランサムは、イギリス北東部リンカンシャー州の田園都市で、前首相マーガレット・サッチャー女史や科学者アイザック・ニュートン卿を生み出した。赤レンガの古い街並みの中には、中世紀にまで溯る建造物や歴史的にゆかり深いスポットも多い。

毎週土曜日、町の広場では14世紀初頭に起源を発すると言われるストリート・マーケットが開かれている。マーケット・プレイスを出ると、イギリスの文豪チャールズ・ディケンズゆかりの高級パブ「エンジェル(ANGEL)」がある。また、町のどこからでも見える86メートルもある尖塔は、セント・ウルフラム(St. Wulfram)教会のもので、グランサムの中心的な存在。目抜き通りにある美しい市庁舎前にはニュートンの全身像があり町に風格を添えている。また、サッチャー女史の生家はレストランになって今も残っている。

町の中心からちょっと離れると田園地帯が広がり、美しい古城(Harlaxton Manor)が見えるが現在はアメリカの大学キャンパスとして使用されている。一方、町の裏手には、ウィザム(Witham)川が草地をぬうように流れている。川の土手から一望できる建物は、14世紀の邸宅グランサム・ハウス(Grantham House)で10ヘクタールにもわたる美しい造景庭園に囲まれ、現在はナショナル・トラストが所有している。

　Grantham is located in the East Midlands of Britain, where ex-prime minister, Margaret Thatcher and a scientist, Lord Isaac Newton were born. There is lots of architecture from the Middle Ages and spots related to Britain's history among the red-brick old townscape.

Every Saturday, an open-air market is open in a square which originates from the early 14th century. Walking from the market, there is a high-class pub called the Angel & Royal where Charles Dickens once stayed. The tall tower that you can see from anywhere in the town is St. Wulfram's church as a landmark. Also, the statue of Isaac Newton in front of the beautiful old town hall along the High Street gives a certain grace to this town. Furthermore, Mrs Thatcher's house still remains, and, until recently, was a restaurant.

Apart from the centre of the town, fields surround the town and a beautiful castle, Harlaxton Manor, that is nowadays used as an American university. On the other hand, at the back of the town, the Witham river runs through the fields, and Grantham House built in the 14th century can be seen from the banks surrounded by a beautiful 10-hectare landscape garden which the National Trust owns nowadays.
