After their 1993 release Betti-Cola ruled the campus airwaves for three consecutive months, cub came out with this quirky gem: Come Out Come Out. The purveyors of cuddlecore lit the fire with Betti-Cola, but this one burned the house down and solidified cub and Mint Records in indie record land. 

Longtime fans of cub may still have their own copy of the charming triple 7” vinyl that Come Out Come Out  was originally released on in 1995, likely picked up during the band’s extensive touring where they shared stages with artists such as They Might Be Giants, Sebadoh, Elliott Smith, Yo La Tengo, Sloan, The Muffs, Magnetic Fields, DOA, Rancid, NOFX, Seam, The Coctails, Sun Ra Arkestra, De La Soul, The Evaporators and Zumpano.

Sammy Brue work is grounded in folk music — from an early age, he was soaking up the Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly that his dad loved — but going all the way back to his debut album (2017’s I Am Nice), Brue has been unafraid to shake things up a bit. Anyone who has explored Brue’s discography has heard straight-up rock ‘n’ roll, country, soul-tinged ballads, and even some solid punk rock. In The Journals, though, Brue sticks to his voice and his acoustic, and that’s all he needs. Keeping things simple on The Journals is the perfect way for Brue to celebrate Justin Townes Earle.

This isn’t the first official live set from Segall—notably there’s Deformed Lobes, a documentation of a 2018 jaunt with the Freedom Band. Here, he’s backed by his ad hoc band the Muggers for an EP that only lasts 19 minutes; on vinyl, the entire second side is devoted to an etching of Segall decked out in a deformed babyface mask, a look that was his signature circa ’16. Though it’s a slight sprint through its five songs, “Live” “At” “The” “BBC” feels like the purest distillation of Segall’s psychedelic chaos, emphasizing energy over expansive space.
